Kinja'd!!!

Last year for Christmas I was in Montreal, Canada and I had real poutine for the first time. It was amazing. It lived up to the hype and I am craving it so much right now. One of the places we went to had duck confit poutine. That was easily the best poutine of the lot. Picture because why not.

Poutine is pretty delicious! I live up here in Nova Scotia, and I actually haven’t had any for awhile now....will have to pop out and get some now, thanks! :P

One thing that did surprise me was the similarity of the fries and cheese. The only difference between the places was the gravy and boy did that make a difference. They were all delicious but the gravy made them all so unique.

I know it’s not quite the same but in the U.K. we have chips, grated cheese and gravy after a night out on the drink.

Tends to look like this when eaten from a polystyrene carton though.

Kinja'd!!!

But I’ve been assured it tastes great.

I’m more a donner kebab after a night out kind of guy.

Well nobody’s Russian to be poutine that in their mouth.

I’ll see myself out now.

Mother of god. What is that amazing thing called? I must know for when I travel to the UK.

Kebabs are great after a night out. Falafel sandwiches are also amazing after a night drinking. That reminds me of a crepe I once had with turkey and cranberry sauce after a night of clubbing. Best thing ever.

As a québécois I prefer my Poutine with vinegar and salt.

My favourite Poutine is chicken-bacon Poutine.

What, the chips, cheese and gravy?

Well it’s chip’s (fries to some but cut twice as think as a French Fry), grate some cheddar cheese on top then pour some thick gravy over the top.

Kebabs here’s are not quite the same as elsewhere. Seasoned lamb meat on a spitt, cut thinly and normally served in a pitta with salad (cabbage, lettuce, cucumber, onion and tomato) but I have it sans salad with chilli sauce and garlic mayo though some have it with grated cheese.

Kinja'd!!!

Also chips, kebab meat and chilli sauce is great.

I....I...I need to go to the UK now. In fact, I may actually try and make the chips, cheese and gravy at home this week.

Mt 3am snack last week.

Donner meat and chips, chips, onion rings and pepperoni pizza.

or one of my favourites.

Kebab meat and chips and a kebab meat pizza.

It’s so easy to make. Fry some chips, put the grated cheese on and top with gravy (beef gravy has more flavour).

I usually order an extra pitta or two to go with it as the pitta is crammed with over two inches of donner meat. Though I prefer them in a tortilla.

There is a Lebanese place near my second office that makes some delicious wraps like in your first picture (but they use chunks of meat in them, though I always get the chicken and/or falafel, haven’t yet done the lamb or beef). I don’t hate myself after eating them, so it’s a bonus.

The latter just makes me think of Scotland. In fact, a lot of your pictures give me visions of the crazy stuff the Glaswegians eat.

I have never had a real/delicious poutine. Should have crossed into Quebec when I had the chance...

Out west, they make it with shredded cheese, which I know is wrong.

Also, I have been thinking about making a Mexican poutine (thought it up, but haven’t made it yet): french fries topped with crumbled queso fresco and enchilada sauce.

Ahem. I’m English. The Scottish border is four miles north of me. Lol.

No Glaswegians do much crazier stuff like battered Mars bars, battered Creme eggs, deep fried pizzas, battered deep fried pizzas, battered deep fried whole burgers (including the bun and salad).

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

They will literally deep fry or batter and deep fry anything.

But it’s a historical thing. Back in Victorian times they’d make think porridge and let it go cold. Then when they wanted to eat some, they’d cut off a slice and deep fry it.

Though it seems quite a worldly thing to do as many countries do it.

...4 miles north...

Carlisle?!

Actually, I think it’s further away, but I love that part of England and right over the border in Scotland. Mind you, my family came from just a short distance north of the border.

Somehow, all the fried takeaway food in the UK just turns my stomach and gives me visions of the deep frying of things that should not be deep fried. There’s a lot of scary stuff like that in the US, too, but you usually find it at fairs and carnivals.

I loved Carlisle. It was my main base for much of my trip to the UK. It’s sort of the crossroads of the area in the same way that Evanston, WY is sort of the crossroads of the mountain west. It’s also a nice city with great weather.

Great weather. You might of been in Carlisle, PA. Lol.

It’ll of changed massively since you were last here.

Carlisle is a great jumping off point for the whole of the U.K. though you could probably say that for Manchester also.

Carlisle is getting more cosmopolitan really. Better eateries and more relaxed atmosphere.

Oh, no. I know it was the UK. I intentionally moved from San Diego to the Seattle area for the weather. It’s actually a little too sunny here for me, but about the best I can find in the US where I can actually find work. I used to describe the warm and sunny weather of San Diego as “oppressive sunshine”. I’m so pale that without sunscreen I’ll burn in minutes in direct sunlight.

The great things about Carlisle for me was that it is a choke point for the rail lines so you can get to numerous places directly from there (Edinburgh, Glasgow, Manchester, Newcastle, and London are all accessible from the railway station, which is why I stayed there instead of Lockerbie), it’s a short drive from many places worth visiting (the Lake District, Dales, Hadrian’s Wall, cute little towns and countryside to the east, etc.), close to family landmarks/ruins (which I visited), it had sensible road design (no crazy stuff like you find around London) so driving wasn’t too stressful, hotels were inexpensive, rental cars were cheap/available, food was decent, etc.

More food options would have been nice when I was Carlisle, so that’s a good thing.

Glad to hear it.

We’ve got food options coming out of our ears.

There’s one I didn’t know about till recently, Sottos. It’s a ‘contemporary Italian cuisine’ restaurant underneath an old church which itself is now an art shop.
