Kinja'd!!!

So I figured since I am going to be putting a lot of miles on this car, I figured I’d share updates with oppo. This is also the third car I’ve boughten, and the first new car I’ve gotten since coming back to oppo so I haven’t had a chance to do this before. Now onto the updates:

First off I would like to say the reason I got this car was because it is fun to drive and it’s running costs are cheaper than the M3s. One way this car differs from the M3 is fuel economy. The M3 gets between 13 and 15 around town and 18 and 20 on the highway.

For the first fill up, I reset both the economy meter and the trip odometer. We have seen before that it’s a bit optimistic in the M3:

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

With the first tank in the 328i, I got 362.3 miles out of it and used 14.584 gallons. The math tells me I did 24.8 mph, still not what the gauge says, but still better than the M3. The first 120 miles were basically me just joyriding, so we shall sees how it settles down into it’s role as a highway cruiser in a few tanks.

I have also decided to track all associated costs with this car. I wanted to do that with the M3, but for some reason never did. So if you want to know how much it costs to own an 8 year old BMW 328i 6MT M-Sport, you’ll find out.

Also, at some point there will be an E92 328i vs E90 M3 review. I haven’t decided what route I want to go with on that one, if I want to compare small differences between the cars or what, if you’ve got any ideas you’re welcome to share them. For example, all pre-LCI E90s had the smokers pack as standard, this was removed in the LCI update. However, all US-Spec LCI M3s retain the smokers pack. My E92 is a pre-LCI E92 and yet doesn’t have the smokers pack yet does have the pre-LCI HVAC controls. That kind of details, I’m not sure if anyone else would enjoy that, so I’m open to suggestions on how to write it up.

I love that you love the BMWs. I was sad the one I looked at was....Not as advertised...

I might have a slight obsession, especially from this era. The fact that I have 2 from this era is probably partially because they drive so nicely and the fact I remember building these cars in the configurator when they were new when I was in college. I also like the E90 M3 a lot more than the F80.

2009 is a good year for E92's.. you can get M-sport, still has the good mirrors, and CIC nav.

Also, 2 of the 4 tires came today! Other 2 should come first thing tomorrow. Then 219m’s installed in the afternoon hopefully.

Also, running costs for the 328i should be low.. 2007 has cost me: many oil changes, a set of tires, a windshield, plugs, and a rear main seal. This is over the span of about 35k miles (sitting at a little under 90k).

Well, they shouldn’t be as much as the M3. I also don’t think my car came with run flats, i’ll have to look into that, but I was thinking about ditching them anyways.

Damn. You’re getting about 40 miles more to a tank than I am then. I think mine is because the vast majority is city driving though.

I didn’t mind the runflats since the car handled so well with them, but the tires I ordered aren’t runflat. A set of OEM tires is about $1300 shipped.. no thanks.

I put 70 miles a day on rural interstate/ county roads, so I’m expecting to get near 30 mpg for my next tank.

You can get the OEM Pirelli runflats for a lot cheaper than that if you shop around. I’ve had to put a few sets on my wife’s car.

My 335i has the sport package, so it’s got the staggered Bridgestone potenzas. So many better, cheaper, non Runflat options out there.

It’s about 170 more miles than I get. My E93 regularly burns an entire tank in under 200 miles. All calm-ish city driving or canyons with a little highway but it’s still surprising.

In college. God, I feel old....

You know what configurator came online when I was in college? The C5 Corvette. You know, back when they started the internet?

Damn, I think my family had high speed internet almost that long though, somewhere around 1999.

Heh. yeah. You can’t believe the jump from dial up to HSI that I got going to college. When I built my first nice computer for college, with an Intel Pentium 233 MHz that was the fastest thing you could get at the time...

We had an iMac G3, at some point and that’s all I remember from back then. I did know how to steal music back then though!

Geez seriously? It must weigh a good bit more than the hardtop then. I didn’t know it was that bad on gas.

Ah ok. Yeah makes sense then. I think the best I have gotten so far is when my wife and I drove to Vegas back in 2015. I think somewhere around 400. This last tank I ended up getting 355 but I used almost 16 gallons.

More details the better! Also thanks in advance for the ownership cost breakdown. I’m still shopping for my perfect E90

Non-sunroof manual N52. There were 2 or 3 when I first started looking, but were picked up before I had a chance to move on them. There’s like 1 right now nationwide and the guy won’t return my messages. Probably thinks I’m a scammer with an out of town number.

Yeah that doesn’t sound too common. I gave in and paid more than I wanted to for mine, but it was literally the only manual m-sport 328i I could find in the country. Conveniently, it was only 40 mins from my parents house and I was up near it when I was test driving cars with a friend, they also offered free delivery, so it kinda seemed like it was meant to be.

Mine is an LCI and therefore has the little open cubby in front of the shifter instead of the ashtray. It’s just wide enough to fit my Moto X Pure laying on its side. That’s where my phone lives all the time, unless I decide to rest it in front of the iDrive screen to use Google Maps instead of the shitty BMW maps (which are updated to the latest map data but still suck compared to Google Maps).

You know how you can adjust the leg bolster in our cars? I’ve got the passanger one out enough where my phone slots perfectly into the gap. The M3 has the outlet, despite being an LCI and the 328i lacks the outlet, despite being a pre-LCI.
