yesterday there was a post about a fresh tool bag, and that got me to thinking, what does oppo keep in the car for the roadside tool box/kit

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

in my small box i keep all the tools it would take to get the cylinder heads of of the truck. which is about all the tools i need to do just about any other roadside repair. there are a few other bits that go with the roadside stuff, like two clothes hangars, some electrical tape, and some length of wire, and a big hammer. but this is pretty well what i use.

Kinja'd!!!

also i keep a cheater in the truck.... there is a nice long section of air hose that goes with it.

SO, what tools do you folks keep handy.........

I got something like this, but to be honest, its too small, so I need to upgrade

Kinja'd!!!

For organization I put tools into smaller nylon bags I got for free. A bag for screwdrivers, a bag for wrenches, cutting tools, electrical, etc.

Spanners up to 22mm, pliers, various screwdriver bits, good selection of sockets, allen keys, drain plug keys and most importantly; zip ties.

I have a nice sized tool box full of the basics if I’m taking a long trip, or I’ll bring it when I tow the RallyMetro out to events this year. Day to day I have a small bag with a recovery strap, some screwdrivers, vice grips, channel locks, a crescent wrench, and some needle nosed pliers. Also, packing tape.

I keep a cloth OE bag with a couple sizes of wrench in my Benz, and a tire iron + tire gauge, some rags, and usually pliers. Sometimes I bring along my ratchet set.

My Rover has some spares - a belt IIRC, a water pump...

I ordered four of these when they were on sale, and I keep one in each car, plus some zip ties and an emergency roadside kit.

Kinja'd!!!

There are better deals out there for a kit like that, but not for the $40 or so I paid for each of them. The selection of tools is good, and they’re of usable quality. There’s other stuff that would be nice to have, but this is plenty for most roadside repairs. Plus, it packs nice and flat into the trunk. No complaints.

those are the guys (tow truck) that i call to help pick up the pieces when i can’t get it done on the side of the road.

i have only had to call them twice? the time the truck dropped a valve, and ate the block, and the time that i ran the rear differential out of oil, after running over a deer(bent the cover slightly).......oh and the time the truck spit out the driveshaft going down the road........ so three TOTAL.

but it sure is nice to have someone scoop you and your car up, and take you home........

I have different kits for different vehicles:

In the S3 I keep just the basics (drivers/snippers/couple wrenches) because it’s new had came with a warranty/roadside assistance.

In the M3: I keep small but complete kit. Drivers, sockets, multimeter/small electronic tools, torque wrench, old drill etc.

On the Grom I keep a multi tool under the seat.

All of my good tools are housed on the workbench that I just built, or in my grab and go tool bag which is just a bag with everything I might need for small consulting jobs.

I should have decent first aid kits in both cars, haven’t sprung for them yet though.

Ehh just kidding. Nothing that would break on my mini will likely be resolved by me with tools. The trans am, I am going to probably bring my whole set if I manage to take it on a road trip this summer.

I’m just under the opinion that if a car requires tools, I probably shouldn’t be driving it. Preemptive maintenance is the key.

I’ve generally got a socket set, 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2", just a cheaper but not garbage store-brand sorta deal, as well as my impact set because the socket set doesn’t have any 1/2" bigger than 11/16". Also a ratcheting 1/2" breaker bar, an older torque-wrench, one each metric and sae wrench sets, set of screwdrivers and random other assorted tools, and a duffle bag of recovery gear, all stashed behind my truck’s seats.

On trips I take this

Kinja'd!!!

I’ve been meaning to get a small tool bag together that I can hide under the cargo floor. When I was dailying old BMWs, I always had a bag of 13, 15, and 17mm wrenches at least, pliers, a hammer, multi screwdriver, fuses, plus whatever else the factory toolkit was missing.

Oh an duct tape and zip ties. My car currently doesn’t have either in it, I need to fix that.

I have a full e46 toolkit, a torque wrench, a 10-21mm wrench set, an air compressor, jumper cables, tire patch kit, set of gloves, a knife/razor blade combo, a few screw drivers, 3 chocks(2 from me and one that I just found out comes with the car) and my Bentley repair manual. aside from the stock toolkit, all of it lives below the trunk floor in the storage space above my spare tire.

Kinja'd!!! "Die-Trying" (die-trying)
03/22/2017 at 17:02, STARS: 0

yeah, there isnt a lot of storage space built into them....... for the longest time i have kept a plug kit, and a long length of airhose, that has two chucks, one on each end. that way i can steal air out of one of my other tires, and get to a tire pump. a while back i finally dug out one of my compression testers, and converted it to a tire inflator. i pretty near just took off the gauge and put on a quick disconnect. it takes a little bit to air up a tire, but it will fill it up within about 6 or 7 min.......
