Today I had to have a part replaced that I’ve never even heard of failing before.

The brake fluid cap

Kinja'd!!!

On a two year old car, the brake fluid cap failed. The float no longer moved freely, so it had to be replaced. Give me a brake break, Audi. What’s next, a fouled lug nut?

Sidebar : While at the dealer, a customer pulled up in his Q3 with a vanity plate, which read “Q30". You were SO CLOSE buddy, but now people think you drive an Infiniti.

Interesting, so they’ve integrated the sensor into the cap now? Looks like the same design as a bad toilet tank valve, but a little pricier. My VAG brake fluid reservoir cracked right open after about 12 years. I was using a Motive Power Bleeder at about 15psi and the brittle plastic just gave up. Thankfully once it was depressurized, it “reformed” itself and didn’t even leak. Those are the best VW repairs of all.

Sidenote: I’ve had a lug nut fail before. Conical seat with an integrated washer, I guess the washer cracked due to temps and stress, and the whole lug nut then developed a hairline crack.

Hmm, bad lug nuts are more of a Chrysler thing I think...

Huh. The brake fluid level sensors on my 30 year old Toyotas are both doing just fine :P

EXACTLY

I’ve had a long line of old cars, and of all of them, only one managed to give me lots of weird issues. An old S4. Now this thing comes a long and starts expanding my library of curse words.
On a 2 year old car. Not thrilled.

Do you happen to own a Ford Fusion? http://repairpal.com/swollen-lug-nuts-509

My Lada has the cap integrated with the level sensor. Pretty funny to think Audi’s ripping them off.

In all honesty though, it’s better than the typical pressure or pedal over-travel switch in the line that doesn’t come on until you’re almost sucking air into the master cylinder.

Audi most likely does not manufacture the cap. The same cap probably shows up on many other cars with the same issue.

But my most problematic vehicle was a 91 Toyota pickup, so what do I know.

In fairness to Audi though I’m pretty sure it’s more an integrated vs. remote reservoir thing.

Actually those are usually fine on all cars, was just your bad luck. Only car that I ever knew that need those replaced frequently were some older Toyota and Geo models in the 90's. I sold them about once a month for various models. Funny that MR2_FTW should mention he never needed one because I can’t recall ever selling an MR2 one.

If youve never fouled a lug nut than youre doing something wrong.

Disclaimer: I love Audis and on the whole they’ve been good to me

Still, it seems like Audi never met a part they couldn’t design to fail or be unreachable or both

Looks like an ATE setup. They should have gone with a Bosch reservoir/master cylinder. Those don’t use cap mounted sensors, and I hear they never fail.
