I forgot how much I liked these. I’ve never had a bad experience with a Toyota and these are super reliable. Plus they’re cheaper than the Tacoma bubble, with lower mileage and the same features.

Should I consider these? I think so.

I could not look at those tail lights everyday. Does anyone make an aftermarket set that looks better? Or is there a better design on a different model year that could be swapped in?

It’s speakers in the tailgate that you can play your music through with it open.

That’s some miles on a 2015! 4runners here are pretty much equivalent with Tacoma prices. I had a friend that had a company lease vehicle, 2013 Limited, that he sold for the buy back price, which was quite cheap for a Limited (somewhere around $24k).

I do like the 4runner though. It’s a nice vehicle. We compared them to the GC a couple of years ago, and my wife just prefered the more lux interior on the Overland. Even in Limited form, the design was a little too utilitarian for her (once again, compared to the Jeep). Me? I would’ve got the 4runner.

Those look aftermarket to me. I thought the stock ones looked like normal lights.

Technically, you wouldn’t be looking at them though...

Nice price for a 5th gen. I like the pre-predator looking ones a bit better but nothing wrong with that.

Lot’s of fun to be had in the overland/offroad community.

The 4Runner is a vehicle that I like on paper but bothers me in real life.

The first thing that bugs me about it is while Jeep has consistently offered awd (not just part-time 4wd) on the Cherokee and Grand Cherokee throughout their lives, Toyota keeps waffling with the 4Runner.

The 1999-2002 3rd gen 4Runner Limited had awd (and an available rear locking diff on the 99-00). It’s kinda small on the inside but the visibility is very good.

I owned a 99 Limited with the rear locker for a day. I bought it, the CEL came on, I scanned it and got a transmission solenoid error. Brought it back to the dealer the next day, they opened up the transmission and found it had a bunch of water damage. They took it back.

The 4th gen had awd standard across the range, and the 2009 Trail Edition had a rear locker, but I hate driving it. You sit way down on the floor, but the roof is low and the dash is tall, so it’s like looking out of a tank.

The 5th gen only offers awd on the Limited. It’s also super tall and without any sort of running boards on the lower trims you have to swing your leg way up into it to get in it. You also can’t see any normal-height vehicles out of the windows.

For the “blah blah you don’t need awd for off-roading” crowd, the reason I like awd is because it’s vastly superior in bad weather on-road driving, which is the majority of what SUVs are used for anyway. When it snows, if you put it in 4H locked, you have to shift out of 4H to do simple things like pull into a parking space without having the driveline bind up on you.

Bruh, they all have 4WD, not AWD. The SR5 and Limited models have RWD with selectable 4WD high and 4WD low.

They’re surprisingly nice to drive. The fit and finish of the interior is fantastic. It’s very plush and comfortable. It’s also very capable with 4WD. The SR5 and Limited models have part-time 4WD with selectable high and low range. One thing though, don’t get the jumpseats in the rear. They’re useless and they use up cargo space.

I love these. the 4.0 V6 is pretty much maintenance free. Solid trucks, unfortunately above my budget. There’s a 2010 (pre-angry eyes) Trail Edition local to me for $24k.

That is incorrect.

The 99-00 Limited and all 00-01 have an electronically controlled center differential that allows awd operation in addition to locked 4wd.

99-00 Limited transfer case shifter:

Kinja'd!!!

H2/H4 = rwd & awd (toggled by a button on the left)
H4L = 4wd, locked center diff
L4L = 4wd low range, locked center diff

The guide to this reminded me that all 01-02 4Runners have awd actually, not just the Limited:

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

H is the main mode for the shifter. Pressing the 4WD button on the side puts it in awd and pressing the center diff lock button on the dash locks it in 4wd.

L4 puts it in 4wd low range with locked center differential

All 4th gen 4Runners have a Torsen helical gearset limited slip center differential. The V6 can run in rwd mode, the V8 can’t.

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

H2 = rwd
H4 = awd, toggles to locked 4wd with center diff lock switch on dash
L4 - 4wd low range, locked

The 2009 Trail Edition V6 has all of these plus adds a rear locking differential.

Toyota cheaped out on the 5th gen 4Runner and removed the Torsen center diff from all trims but the Limited. It reverted to a basic shift-on-the-fly transfer case with no center diff.

Kinja'd!!!

H2 = rwd
H4 = 4wd locked
L4 = 4wd low range locked

The Limited has an “H4F” for full-time 4wd, i.e. awd with the Torsen center diff.
