Update: Just ordered the Yi . Thanks for all the recommendations, guys!

Hey guys! I know this is a pretty broad topic that we bring up at least once a month but I realized last night that I still haven’t replaced my stolen dashcam. THAT AIN’T RIGHT! So please, sound off if you have any recommendations. I’m looking at the very well populated $50-$100 range.

It’s for the FoST so I’ll be wrapping the cable around to get to the back outlet since Ford’s infinite wisdom put the front one right where wires would wrap around the shift.

It’s like as soon as I don’t have a camera running, shit like this happens:

Kinja'd!!!

But not really...cuz Russia. Still need one, though.

I got a Rexing V1 off of Amazon. I ran the power cable tucked up in the headliner, down the right A-pillar trim to behind the radio. then I got a lighter socket and built a harness with a relay, triggered by the key-on wire to my radio to turn it on when I start the truck.

I’ve got the Mobius 1. Works well. Lots of bits and pieces to pick and choose from.

I’m running a cheap (it was about $50) Chinese unit labelled “HDE-C18” (but I’ve seen what appears to be the same exact product sold under other names like “i1000”).

The picture quality is decent but not that great (check YouTube for examples). It can read license plates if the other car is close by, but after a car-length or two I start to lose those details. It’s much worse at night, when things get really grainy. It will manage to pick up license plates if I’m stopped at a red light, where my headlamps can light the plate up. Maybe some day I’ll upgrade to something with better picture, but I’m afraid that’s going to be somewhere in the triple digits to get all the features I want.

But aside from the image quality, it’s actually very good for the price. The picture is still technically “HD”, and it has all the common dash-cam features like loop recording, motion detection, still image capture, etc. Best of all, it’s dual-channel so it can record what’s happening behind me. I also like that it’s low-profile and I can tuck it behind my rear-view mirror instead of having to mount some chunky GoPro unit.

I have one I bought like three years ago and still haven’t installed it.
As for what I would recommend, I say this:

https://www.amazon.com/YI-1080P60-Dashboard-G-Sensor-Recording/dp/B01C89GCHU

And the reason for that, this is the camera used in this video that made the rounds a few weeks back. Look how clear that picture is.

Bought two of these in 2014 according to the email receipt. Still use them every day. Wife’s car has the second one. Got the capacitor version because I had read the battery powered model does not last as long because of the wide swings in temperature (especially high heat) inside a vehicle.

Looks tempting for the price. The amazon listing isn’t clear (or I read too fast) - did yours come with a mount, or any wiring for the charger? I have been using a phone as a dashcam in my old car, but the mount blocks some of the view, and it is very susceptible to vibration.

I have a Blackvue in the modern car bought over 2 years ago, works wonderfully, but wasn’t so inexpensive.

There might be some confusion here. I do not have this dashcam. I have another model I purchased about three years ago. No clue what model it even is since I’ve never hooked it up.

I just recently picked up the Viofo A119S. Came highly recommended and although I’ve never had a cam before so I can’t say if its an amazing deal or not, it’s worked quite well for me. Nice picture and small size.

I need several things my dashcam to do

1) record during day - obviously
2) record during night - some cameras turn to shit at night
3) Stay attached to your windshield. suction cups fall off all the time
4) overwrite old data so I don’t have to maintain it when it gets full
5) show speed/gps location
6) have a replay button - show a cop what happened on the spot, not mail him a flash drive in a week or two.

As for recommendations, I am using one currently and it has all those features.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00URC5JTI/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

to be honest tho, I have not tested the play back. I think there is a button to play back. Not 100% sure.

That’s the one that got stolen out of my car, actually. Also bought mine in 2014.

Looking for something else this time around. Suction cup failed one day and it fell...light build on it popped open a bit and never quite lined up properly again. Was solid, though. good value.

I know how that goes. The two we have require a few tries to get them to stick these days as well, but with enough additional liquid, they both will stay unless it’s a really hot day.

Hope you find a great replacement. I love the Russian versions I see in the dash cam compilations that show speed, direction, GPS coordinates...

Man, I’m glad they didn’t have dash cams and hidden GPS trackers when I was a younger man borrowing my parents cars! My dad would have never let me drive again if he knew just how fast that Taurus and 280 ZX had been a few times.

not a dash cam recommendation, but a suggestion for power. It looks like some of the dashcams use USB cables for power. Couldn’t you use the sync USB for a power outlet? I remember from my focus days there was the standard USB to plug an ipod or whatever in to and I found a 2nd one (voice command “USB 2") that could power something without taking up your usable good spot. Just a thought.

This is my go-to for dash cam info. I have a G1WC for Kristin, and an Viofo A119S for Valka, both capacitor units hardwired. For the A119S I installed it with a Multisafer, 6 hours recording after ignition off and for avoiding problems with start-stop, because Germans.

Yeah...not looking for all that fancy detail cuz in Massachusetts the default highway speed is practically reckless in the eyes of the law.

not relevant to your model, but a better reference for what I’m talking about (and a hat tip to an old forum post by me) http://forums.focaljet.com/showthread.php/617086-Second-USB-08-Focus

That’s in the center console, actually. Easiest thing that I ended up doing with my last was running the wire along the windshield liner, down the A, under the floormat and passenger seat then to the outlet right above the hump in the back seat. Same thing would have to be done for the usb just up the console and in.

Had the G1W, actually. It was what got stolen. Looking for something with a little better build quality cuz mine fell from the windshield once and kinda just popped open, not sitting right again though it worked. I’ll look through the site...thanks!

ah yeah, it’s the double USB in the console isn’t it? Eh worth a shot I guess.

Oh man. I’m going to have to chuck them. Didn’t think about that. Wife and I are planning to move to NH to semi retire in a year or so. Going from SoCal where it’s 80 mph or get run over, or crawl at 5mph in traffic, I might get a ticket or two. The 50-60mph to 35/25 because you suddenly entered a town is going to take some getting used to.

Although, when we go (almost) every year, I love driving there because it’s so relaxed compared to my daily. And I get to drive a Subaru for a couple of weeks. Do they even allow anything other than Subarus or trucks in NH? ;)

I have an Aukey dash cam in my car right now. The main reason that I chose this one is that it is super small and subtle. The one I had before hung down from a big suction cup and had a screen that could not be turned off which was extremely annoying. This one dosen’t even have a screen. Which I guess could be good or bad. Although it does make it almost impossible to change any settings. On the other hand the video quality and reliability of it are fantastic and more than makes up for the lack of a screen. And for the price it’s definitely better than nothing.

I did not have good luck with my G1W-C. It would NEVER hold the date/time for more than a few hours which meant it was constantly overwriting the same times. Even when I would fix the time the recording files would be a mess of dates and times when I put the MicroSD card in my laptop.

0/10 would never buy. Would have got it replaced but it was a gift for my bday and I did not have the receipt.

I actually work right near the MA/NH border and joke to my coworkers that show up in Subarus that my impression of NH is when you buy a house you get a complimentary Subaru as a welcome gift.

I personally don’t see shifts like that because I rarely go through NH. One thing that helps, though, is having the appropriate state plate. I immediately change my driving tendencies when I’m in NH because I’ve been targeted before for having a MA plate. Otherwise, MA speed limits are as such: 55 = 70 (at least) and 60 = 75 (at least).

I have a Vantrue N1 in my Subaru Outback using the provided USB cable tucked around the front window trim. Video quality is competitive for the price bracket (1080p30, sample ), though I’m guessing you might be able to find a little better if that’s your priority. The main draw for this one IMO is the combination of small size (largest dimension is < 2.5") + usable LCD video/interface display.

I forgot about that one. I had it on my list before I got the GW1 as my last one.

Looking at the Yi and a Spy Tec one with the N1 as my 3 finalists now. Each have their pros and cons but I don’t think I can go wrong.
