Should CO alarms be required in cars?

Saw a story where two teenagers died because exhaust was leaking into the car. It looks like CO sensors are pretty cheap so why not put them in cars?

Here’s a Yamaha R6 because it’s pretty.

I don’t think it’s a bad idea but at the same time there are so few instances of this being a problem (other then suicide and police cruisers) that I don’t think it will ever become main stream. Also, electricity doesn’t release CO2(from the car) so then it would be pointless.

CO shouldn’t be a problem in a car with a functioning catalytic converter. If you’re driving some old crapcan with an exhaust that leaks without throwing codes AND manages to get into the car, this law won’t help.

About 20 years ago I borrowed my mother’s 1990 VW Vanagon to help a friend move. Before we started this 350 mile trip we were sitting for about 15 minutes with the car running (it was a cold evening), making a few phone calls when we started to notice a few of the symptoms of CO poisoning (dizziness, confusion, light-headedness, nausea amongst others). Thankfully we recognized what was happening and got some fresh air, but this occurred on a fanatically well-maintained, smog-legal car in California.

When the car was moving, CO wasn’t a problem. Although adding a CO sensor sounds like a good idea on the surface, I suspect that the conditions that would actually trigger such an alarm would be few and far between.

I thought I had a million dollar idea, but then found that it already exists. For example:  https://www.amazon.com/72-9021-Pocket-Carbon-Monoxide-Detector/dp/B001G0STBK

Required? Absolutely fucking not.

Is it a good idea to have one, especially in an older car? Probably.
