Kinja'd!!!

Put my new RE71Rs on my car and went for a drive

Kinja'd!!!

HOLY SHIT IS THIS HOW MIATAS ARE SUPPOSED TO BE?!?!?! THE STEERING IS SO COMMUNICATIVE. INPUTS ARE IMMEDIATELY TRANSLATED INTO FACE-TEARING LATERAL GS. I’ll have to find a skidpan parking lot and see how many Gs my phone says I can pull. It’s obscene. I can cruise along at 60mph and just yank the steering wheel back and forth and it’s like I have a telepathic connection to the wheels of the car. It’s stupid. Now I gotta replace my blown shocks...

Those are the most aggressive and best tires I have ever had the pleasure of owning. Lasted me 10k. Enjoy.

Seriously, one of the most overlooked mods and probably the most important.

Ok, I’ll be the first to say it. And hopefully the last.

Tires. Are. Not. A. Mod.

Tires. They are essential. You can pick different tires with different grips. Tires are available for sale everywhere, and you can get most tires in sizes for your car. Tires are a development product, ever changing, and have different wear aspects, grips, etc. They are not a mod. Brake pads, same thing. You can get different brake pads with different friction coefficients. Brake pads are not a mod. Big Brake kits are a mod. Tires and brake pads, these are not mods. You are not modifying the car with tires. You are putting new tires on.

That said, HOLY SHIT I KNOW RIGHT?!

Heh. This.

RE11s would have been a better choice, overall.

Michelin Pilot Super Sports probably would have been an even better choice.

I’m hoping to have the same experience. Tonight I’m picking up 30% lighter wheels already shod with RE71Rs to use for “special occasions” (since they wear so quickly).

No doubt! I did a full suspension rebuilt (shocks, control arms, bushings, etc.) and picked up some Pilot Super Sports.

DIFFERENT CAR. Performance envelope is WAY larger than before.

I will never cheap out on tires for my car again.

You are not modifying the car with tires. You are putting new tires on.

I think the idea that tires are a modification is in the sense that you are putting on different tires (or brake pads, or shocks) than the factory selected. In the case of grippier tires, the trade off is less life, more cost (and likely a harsher/louder ride) to achieve better grip.

I do see the distinction however, that tires, pads, etc. are consumable items. So the “modification” isn’t permanent, because once those items wear out, who knows what the owner will select for a replacement?

It’s still not a modification, unless you are shaving slicks. Then it can be considered a modification. Otherwise, it’s just putting on new tires.

Re71rs are basically street legal slicks. “200 TW” my ass. I wish treadware ratings were actually standardized across brands.

No way you are gonna fit MPSS on a Miata though lol. Pretty sure the smallest size they come in is like R19

Anything bigger than a 16 is DONKED on an NA/NB. Even 16s are kinda big but can be okay. Standard size anyone would use is a 15. Now on an NC/ND though, yeah that would work fine.

You plan on dailying those tires all summer? I doubt they will last more than one summer in that case.

I think ‘donked’ might be an overstatement, bit I get your point.

That said, I’m no sure I’d suggest Re71s for a DD to anyone...

03/22/2017 at 14:09, STARS: 0

Oh agreed, it is a mild waste of money to DD those lol. I mean I would find it worth it but my girlfriend would definitely get mad at me for doing that. Running an extra set of wheels: one set for regular summer and the other for autox/track day/canyon carving is definitely a necessity in my mind. Then nothing beats the RE71R for that purpose!
