Still car-shopping for my brother

I appreciate your collective advice on the Porsche 944 , which has almost definitely been ruled out. We found this tidy 2003 Lexus IS300 about two hours from us. It seems perfect, but my brother wan’t quite sold. He wants something that stands out from the crowd, and a grey Lexus doesn’t quite fit the bill. Too bad, I’d drive it happily. Oh well, I’ve already got a car. The hunt continues, and I’ll be interested to see where it ends up.

Your brother lowkey sounds spoiled. I’d have been stoked to get a car like that as my 1st. I was blessed with a non a/c, power steering, clear coat peeling 95 Ford Taurus. With a top speed of 85.

I had the feeling this would come up. The reality of it is, he’s being allowed to pick his own car within reason, just like I did mine. I drove dozens of cars that most teens would’ve been perfectly happy with, but I didn’t pick them.

I guess that more makes both of us spoiled than anything else. Oh well.

My bad. I did not mean for that to come out as an attack. An observation from the other side of the pasture per say, I’m sure there are lots of factors that are involved in the decision making weren’t privy to, which is cool.

My point being, this is a 1st car, it needs to be reliable, fuel efficient (relatively) and non descript . Because things that are visually appealing don’t stay that way due to others jealousy and pettiness. Plus, there are other costs, because getting a car that you’re not sure will start is something no one especially a new driver should deal with. Later on absolutely, but not now.

If it needs to stand out from a crowd, then a vinyl wrap is the answer.

Was tempted to buy a 2004 IS a few years back. It was more than I wanted to spend at the time but I’ve always really liked them.

Really solid cars. I’m sure there’s a thing or two that go bad like all cars but being a Lexus it’ll be a great car. If you’re brothers is into modifying there’s at least a market for that with these.

The obvious answer is a Honda Crosstour.

Unterstood completely, no offense taken. All the points you make are good ones. And I’m perfectly willing to admit that getting to turn your noes up at this lovely Lexus is definitely spoiled.

IMO, he should be in the safest car within the budget, regardless if he likes it. Then if he wants something else he can save for it and will appreciate it more. First cars generally get wrecked, and nobody has any idea if he’ll be a good, let alone safe driver. First cars should also not be fast.

Actually we just looked at an ‘07 9-5 wagon. That example was too tired, but Saabs are on the list.

That straight-six is a thirsty thing.

How about an Acura TSX? Same luxury but cheaper to run.

Has he looked at anything in an old N/A 55 AMG Mercedes? That stock exhaust note stands out from the crowd very well.

Go find something old at a junkyard. Use remaining funds to get it running again.

Anything with a solid engine should be easy enough to get parts for. It will teach repairs and maintenance and probably be way cooler than anything newish anyway.

i felt liek the black wrx was to some extent an sleeper. the black hid the sporty looking details so most people just saw a hatchback. I was amazed at how many people actually had no clue what a WRX really was.

And yeah, it somehow manages slightly worse mpg than my A8.

Nah. Clean ones are probably considerably more reliable and cheaper to maintain than your Audi. They’re really quite simple and even easy to work on. They still have way more torque and wheel spin than a first car should have though IMO.

My nephew has my old ‘02 IS that I drove for 10 years as his first car... lucky bastard. I had an ‘84 s10 blazer as my first car and it was a certified piece of shit.

I never thought I would own a car for 10 years which should tell you how much fun they are. Not a ton of power by today’s standards but handles well and is a joy to drive.
