Last weekend was my oldest sister’s birthday. On Sunday my middle sister told me “She wanted some makeup and I bought it for her, so you owe me $66.” In the past few weeks she never mentioned to me anything about getting her a present. I don’t care about the money part of it, but this is not how you buy gifts for people... She does this all the time.

Sort of related:
I’m an excellent gift-giver, because I make note of things that people say off hand they want and then buy those things when it comes time to give a gift.
One such gift was a bottle of Chanel nail polish that a friend had texted to me and said she liked it. I bookmarked it and when her birthday rolled around, I went to buy it, but nobody had it in stock.
I went shopping at Macy’s with a mutual friend and told her how I couldn’t find it anywhere. About ten minutes later, she pops up with a shopping bag and is like “Look! I got her that nail polish you mentioned as a present!”
I was like, “I’m going to pay you for that nail polish now, because if you steal my gift, I will FUCKING CUT YOU, BITCH.”
Then she was like “it can be from the both of us!”
“No. No it can’t. That is MY gift. You so much as mention that played a role in poaching that gift and you are dead to me forever, and I will FUCKING CUT YOU.”
Long story short, I gave her the nail polish and it was the best present ever.

I have a simple answer for people when they ask me for money: “I don’t got it”. Boom. Conversation ended. No one can argue that you have something after you tell them that you don’t.

I really hate gift giving. Largely because I want to give good gifts. Good gifts are usually a bit more expensive and everyone is a cheapskate. As a result I either spend too much and people resent me or I give something I don’t want just to stay under the unspoken cap.

I think it’s always a good idea to get something personal. Gift cards are a cheap way out. But last week was a friend’s birthday so I had made her a digital print just for her and had a poster of it delivered to her house. She loved it. I don’t like buying gifts for ungrateful people and my sisters tend to be ungrateful, so

I hate gifts, too, for a twist on that...
I like giving people stuff, and I like it to be good stuff. I’m also a tightwad.
So either I’ll beat myself up for not giving something or I’ll give something really nice while dying inside
