So I’m wondering why is it that we seem to talk about or hear about 944's often. frequently really but I never seem to hear about 968. I’ve also never seen one come to think of it.

Yet I’ve always been fascinated by them. well their 3.0lt 4 cylinder more than the rest of the car really. I’ve always wondered why the 944 love but none for the 968? I mean it looks like a mini 928 with pop up lights and all! so tell me is it terrible? did people just forget about them? what’s the deal yo?

also if you have ever driven one please do tell. Whats a 3 liter 4 banger like??

I think the main reason you rarely hear about them is that they sold approximately 6* of them.

I liked them when they came out but they just faded away when they invented the boxter. Here’s a nice example for $23k, was probably $12k 5 years ago.

1995 starting but I’m sure there’s atleast a 20k reserve on that.

Incredibly low sales volume means that they’re really hard to find, and usually a little pricier for it as well. There’s typically a small gaggle of 944 and occasional 924 for sale in my area but not so much with the 968.

I would say availability and niche.

Most cars come up in the context of “I want” or “you should consider.” And the 944 is really common, inexpensive, easy to work on, not bad in reliability, RWD, quick, and not terribly unpractical. They are one of the more compelling buys in the $3000-5000 range.

However, 968s cost $15,000 ish, and that’s if there is one near you(closest to me based on a quick search is 4 hours away for $20,000). And at that price you could look at lots of more modern cars like a toybaru or maybe 370z, or if you’re into porsches a 996 or Boxster.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s a cool car. It’s just pretty unique.

The 924 is less loved than the 944. The 968 gets less love than the 928.

It’s just a newer version of the 924/944/Audi VW Van

The best way to describe the engine after a few years of driving one is ‘cognitive dissonance’. With the balance shafts it feels as smooth as the I6 in my E34, but it sounds like what it is, namely a big-ass I4; your butt and ears are in constant disagreement. Torquey as all fuck, and one of my favorite Porsche engines.

Like all the other vehicles in the 924/944/968 family is that the interior is quite spartan. No toys, no luxury goodies. But that’s fine because it’s a friggin’ sports car, and driving is the main focus. And it drives quite nicely.

Yes, there are four seats, and yes, I’ve had four adults inside. Not comfortably, mind you, but we did all fit. The steering wheel was in my chest and the top of the windshield was at my forehead, but we fit, and I’m not a small guy. I wouldn’t recommend it on a regular basis...

Love these things. The 3.0 is a great engine, though I prefer the earlier 944S2 with it, just because I prefer the 944's looks. The 968 is undeniably the better car overall, the ultimate development of the platform, with a genuinely good interior and ventilation. Good torque, and they rev hard, a massive improvement on the old single-cam 2.5 & 2.7. There were never very many sold here, and most seem to have been Cabriolets, which more or less ruins them in my book. They were also sold with automatics, which makes the number of really desirable ones pretty small.

because they sold 12k in 3 years, vs 164k in 9 years for the 944. the odds of seeing and/or experiencing one was much greater.

I don’t really think they’re forgotten, they just occupy an odd niche. They’re not that different than a 944 but they cost considerably more. If you want a fast 4-cylinder transaxle, it’s much cheaper to get a decent 944 Turbo and mod it.

There are also far fewer available - there are thousands and thousands of 944s out there but not nearly as many 968s.

Plus, the people who buy them tend to be “collectors” and not “drivers” so they probably don’t hang out here.

Also, if you want a 3.0L, it’s available in the 944 body in the form of the 944S2. (not quite as much power as the 968 version thanks to the 968's fancy tuned intake and variable valve timing, but still a big ol’ four cylinder)

I drove a bunch of German FWDs in the 90s -- the cars were 80s -- and there were lots of little bits to fix all the time, but it came with driving a VW. I never gave it much thought.
