Ok, so last time, we shed some weight out of the core of the case. Now it’s time to get the transmission out of that catch-pan and up where it’s easier to work on. I don’t have a transmission stand and I don’t feel like buying one, so I’m gonna show you guys how I use a standard engine stand.

But first, we’re gonna pull the bottom pan, filter, and valve body out, then fish out some accumulator pistons:

(Note: I did a lot of things out of order, so I’m trying to reconstruct the process here in a way that makes more sense than what I actually did. There’s a parking pawl here, but I didn’t remove until later. The next picture below shows it already removed from the case.)

Now that the hydraulics are out of the way, the bottom of the case looks something like this:

Now we’re ready to mount it on the stand. First, we remove the head from the engine stand...

...and bolt it right up to the case, using the bolt-holes from the pan. To avoid damage to the aluminum, each bolt gets a nylon washer where it meets the case:

Despite having partially gutted the transmission, it’s still pretty heavy. The good news is, we just have to wrestle the head back onto the stand, instead of trying to line up the bolts the hard way. Eat your Wheaties, lift with your legs, and voila!

I will be getting into an FX Ford-O-Matic soon. Only to replace the screen, pan gasket, and pump seal, and flush it, most likely, but at any rate I’ll be checking the governor to make sure my 2-3 shift gremlins are all linkage and poo in the trans related.

I like posts like this. I think about taking pictures and whatnot while working on my truck but that just adds time and extra work

I know from its shifting that all four friction surfaces are working (two bands, two clutches). Which means that in theory it’s okay if I can make it go 2-3 every time. 98,000 miles.

It’s unlike a lot of transmissions of its day (including the C4 and the big name GM models) in having a Ravigneaux gearset instead of Simpson sets - which means instead of concentric sleeves between the planets and brake bands on each outer ring, there’s a band on the outside of a dual-stage common ring and a band on the outside of an inner planet support, with multiple concentric input shafts and two suns. First to second shift requires a sprag clutch, and first (manually selected) is differently handled than first (auto) as a consequence. Wacky.

Fortunately, the Old Car Manual Project and some guy who scanned a whole ‘58 shop manual in Germany have me covered (‘63 FOM/FX medium case is very similar to the small-case, big case FOMs of ‘58).
