Will this last long enough until trade in?

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

My power steering pump is slowly dying! As some might know, I’ve already bought another car and arranged a trade in price for the Honda, so it’s pretty much a rental to me right now, and I’m not going to waste any money on a car the dealer was too lazy to properly look at. ;)

The problem is that I couldn’t do a straight swap on the spot (we don’t do paper plates or such nonsense in Europe) so I’ll have to drive another 550 kms to hand this in and pick up my new to me vehicle. Unfortunately , next weekend is EUROOPPOMEET in Spa and at the ‘ring so I can’t pick it up until the weekend after that. So about 2200 kms it is. Will this last long enough? And yes, I’ve checked the fluid level, it’s spot on.

I wouldn’t worry about that at all.

O-ring? Chances are that sound is just because air got into the system. It’s a very simple fix. It’s where the vacuum hose meets the pump.

Just imagine your power steering to fail on either Spa or the ‘Ring lelz.

Never mind.

You’ll just have to use Armstrong steering when the fluid is all gone! (arm strong....)

I bet he could replace the power steering pump in no time though.

This sounds soothing. Thanks! Can you back that up with some more words to make me feel even more comfortable?

It’s probably just a worn o-ring or a dying hose and not the pump itself.

I didn’t say it’d be ok. I just said I wouldn’t worry about it.

How to check/fix that while spending almost ZERO money?

The problem is that I couldn’t do a straight swap on the spot (we don’t do paper plates or such nonsense in Europe)

While this is true I can most certainly buy a car and drive it straight away. In the Netherlands the plates stay with the car, not the owner. A 5 minute trip to a postal office of which there’s at least one in almost every village and it’s in my name, then a few clicks on the website of my insurer and I’m good to go.

Even in Germany I simply got a Kurzzeitkennzeigen when I bought a German car on Ebay. It was a lot more hassle, but it worked.

It’s more a thing of cheap car from a private party (my experiences) versus an expensive car from a dealership (what you’re doing).

For a few years my cousin drove an old Kenworth semi tractor with no power steering. His hands got so strong during that period that he wouldn’t shake anybody’s hand, because he couldn’t do it without crushing their hand (my cousin is a monster to begin with).

Check for a guide for your model online. There will probably be a forum post like this:

Usually there are bubbles in the PS reservoir while the car is running.

I guess, if you haven’t, it’d also be worth checking the power steering belt. Although I doubt it since you’d hear it screaming like a banshee if it was too bad. Anyway just find the mid-point of the belt and twist it. It should twist 90 degrees, no more or less.

Also just a reminder those vintage Hondas don’t use regular PS fluid.

What do they use then?

It’s an oil based fluid. You can get it from the dealer for like $7 (US) and it’s less than a quart. You can get other brand stuff, just make sure it says it’s made for Honda’s on the bottles.

I think Prestone makes a compatible version as well, it’s labeled for Hondas
