A thought on Edd's departure

Kinja'd!!!

I’ve been thinking a bit about about Edd China leaving Wheeler Dealers, and I was drawn back to this quote from his video :

He felt that cutting down the actual repair portions of the show would “compromise the quality of my work and would erode my integrity as well as that of the show.” So he has taken the difficult decision of letting Velocity “get on with it” without him.

When he mentions “integrity,” do you think that Velocity was heading in the direction of having some of the work done elsewhere, or using cheaper parts or labor to save money? In other words, might they start featuring work that Edd didn’t actually do? We may never know, but that might explain why Edd wants to keep his “integrity” intact.

I thought it had to do more with cutting corners in terms of wiring, paint, welding, panel repair, etc.

Some of the work had already been outsourced (as with some of the other shows of it’s kind) and towards the end, the ‘member of the public’ who had come to look or buy the car turned out to be a member of the staff, family member or friend.

I think, ‘his integrity’ was his fixing the small parts where (like Porsche) they’d rather you buy the whole part from them rather than sourcing the small part from eBay or elsewhere.

Sounds they started outsourcing the work and made him more of a “face” than he wanted to be.

I agree with him. Mike I can take or leave. Edd’s insights were what I watched for. But then I do a fair amount of mechanical and restoration work.

I hope he turns up on something soon!

I remember Borsuq posting a while ago that the FSO Syrena they did on the show was seen again in Poland some 2 or 3 years after they gave it the full “Wheeler Dealers treatment”. It was sporting questionable bodywork, a respray that was the classic ten footer, and some mechanical problems.

We don’t know where it was in those 2-3 years, but it seems to indicate that they did some less than stellar work on it.

In the beginning, Edd painted wings with rattle cans as best as he could and was honest about it. At the end they always acted like they had a pristine specimen, when apparently some corners were cut. Looks like he was fed up with that and I can only applaud him for his decision.

Agreed. I watched the one where they did a Camaro (forget the year, but it had the split front bumper), and Mike put stripes on it that were clearly not centered. I paused the DVR to show it to my wife. It was really pretty bad. Mike needs to stick with the tea and laptop.
