As I approached the E60, I was impressed at its overall presence and cleanliness. Then I parked next to it and realized the wheels were not plasti - dipped, powdercoated, or painted. It was 100% brake dust. The crazy part was the body was pretty clean — easily washed within the last week. I forgot to take a pic after I rubbed my finger on the spokes and they were shiny silver underneath. That ’ s the most amazing mix of patience and laziness I think I ’ ve ever seen. (If Kinja is being Kinja, you might have a bonus pic of my kids with a Brabus SMART last summer).

I didn’t even know you could get such an even coat of brake dust. It’s impressive how the owner was able to maintain the brake dust while keeping the car and the badges so clean.

Exactly! I can only assume whatever the Roundel centercaps are made of just repelled the dust a little better than the painted parts. It was surreal.

My father is guilty of this. IF he goes through the car wash, he just gets the basic wash where they don’t touch the wheels. It was so bad on a previous car that I had to take the front wheels off, and go to town with a dremel to get the really caked on stuff.

I’ll wash it for him in the warmer months, because hes too old to have to deal with shit like that, and he lets me keep my M3 in his garage.

I always assumed the wheels on my discovery were covered in brake dust then clear coated to get them to look the way they did.
Perhaps this BMW owner could attempt that? haha

Nah. It’s automatic so that the inevitable plasti-dip peels off easier.

A substance which repels brake dust? Why aren’t we making wheels out of this?!?
