Kinja'd!!!

Last month my car was having power steering issues, there was virtually no power steering when the rpm was low (slow corners, parking lots, etc). Took it in to the shop, they replaced the pump and the belts, which fixed the problem.

Fast forward to last week and the problem came back. Low RPM, no power steering. I nursed it through the rally trip and back home, and made an appointment for tomorrow.

Turns out she was feeling impatient. The belt snapped on the way in to work this morning, mid-corner. I’m interested in seeing what the shop says the culprit is. The belts were new, the pump was new, the rack was replaced back in August.

Power steering and Subarus with the name XT don’t seem to have a good track record. I had an XT6 that had optional power steering, ie it worked mostly. Then it would rain or I would get stuck in some stop and go traffic and it would just stop working for 5-30 seconds at a time.

Did you request the matching color tow truck on purpose?

It was all that drifting I did to get the trailer parts in October.

My bad.

on a more srs note, this picture makes me sad. It’s frustrating fixing the issue only find out it is not really fixed.

I know that feel. I’m in my shops waiting room right now with brakes problems after having brake work done. Frustrating

Caster (and I think king pin inclination?) is also an important factor in steering force, and a lot of modem cars have a lot more than old cars used to have, due to the lack of manual steering models, and the desire for high speed stability.

1x VW Rabbit pickup, 2200lb curb, 175/70 R13, 1x Land Rover, curb somewhere around 2800lb, 7.50-16 bias ply, 1x Galaxie, 3800lb curb, 7.50-14/8.00-14 bias ply originally, currently something like a 195/70 14 (?).

Have not gotten in any time driving the Ranchero yet - low curb (2600ish) but fairly wide tires now.

Sounds like you need to go to skinny tires. I’m really sure nothing will go wrong with that. All joking aside, sounds stiff but manageable, and if you didn’t have daily paralleling to do...

To be fair, the XT6 had a strange speed-sensing electrohydraulic power steering setup that used a remote electrically driven hydraulic power steering pump. Quite an unusual setup for the time.

I believe there was a recall for intermittent power steering loss that required the replacement of the signal and power controller. The brushes in the electric motor also tended to wear out by 70,000 miles, also resulting in intermittent power steering loss.

You’re not a real rally team until you have a matching flatdeck..

Didn’t you just off?
