Too bad Audi drivers never use them.

I was shocked as well. Nearly crashed when I saw it.

Are North American models like that, too?

Aren’t those banned for the Americans?

The rest of us get them on various Lexuseses and Fords as well.

US not sure, but I’m positive I saw the scrolling effect on the ones in Canada.

no, but NHTSA compliant ones have to flash the larger brake light element along with the sequential strip.

I think this is a hold-over from when the few cars with sequential turn signals used mechanical sequencing mechanisms (‘66 Thunderbird, ‘67-70 Cougar,) and the regulation was written such that if the sequencer failed, at least one segment which was “large enough” to meet the regulation had to work. Which is why the 2010+ Mustang was approved, but Audi’s had to be modified.

now that everything’s electronic and LED, that’s not an issue. But it’s difficult to change regulations, especially for a relatively trivial issue like this.

Does that mean your Audis get orange indicators and red brake lights flashing simultaneously then? That must look mighty odd.

Do Ford and Lexus have to do the same (logically they would I suppose)?

no, they’re all red. NHTSA doesn’t mandate amber turn indicators in the rear. they’re allowed but not required. needless to say, they can’t use the sequential feature on the front turn indicators.

AFAIK Lexus does not enable this feature in the US. I don’t know what Ford does elsewhere, but on the Mustang (the only US model with sequential indicators) each segment of the lights is large enough to meet regulations as a turn indicator. so if they fail to sequence (only one segment flashes) they’re not out of compliance:

gotta keep in mind that this requirement came from an era when sequential indicators were controlled by something like this:

an electric motor, cam wheel, and some relatively fragile reed switches. they broke frequently, so that’s why the regulation was written as it was.

Mustangs outside North America don’t have sequentials at all. I guess Ford were too cheap to design different lights so instead the existing ones are divided up into indicators and brake/tail lights. They fit Audi style sequential LEDs front and rear to some upmarket Mondeo (Fusion) models.

the EU Mustang tail lamps are different; they have clear lenses with amber indicator strips between the red segments.

Yes, but they could have chosen to provide sequentials by for example splitting each bar into upper and lower segments so you could then have the upper segments as indicators and the lower as brake/tail lights or vice versa which would then allow a sequence of three indicators but as that would have needed extra bulbs and different reflectors at extra cost they decided against.
