Leave it to Citroen to push the envelope. They have some insanely talented designers...

Don’t lenses help control the light, I’m pretty sure LED’s would scatter light all over with out lenses,

Yes, but with proper design, no.

They’ve always lead the way, I wish they’d make an effort to come back tho the US. Though I know they won’t.

The problem with the US is that it has freaky regulations and they have a bad reputation here. If our stupid country would get with the program and adopt some kind of international first world standard for car regulations, it wouldn’t be so onerous to convert cars from other markets for sale here.

yea there’s no way this meets any US headlamp regulations

also I’m pretty sure some of the design elements don’t even meet Euro radii requirements, etc

With the protectionists we have in power now, it’s not gonna get any better.

There may be lenses on the LEDs themselves, but you don’t need a big unit imitating a traditional reflector housing.

Yeah, if BMW’s laser headlights don’t these certainly won’t. It’s not as if we’re getting it anyway.

I want a car with all the LEDs hidden behind a translucent paint or some kind of panels that match the paint but when turned on the covers turn clear.

Mind you, one of the most efficient ways to do a LED low beam with a well-defined cutoff ends up being a form of reflector housing anyway.

Kinja'd!!!

I’ve noticed a fair amount of cars going that route, instead of projectors or anything else, lately - even high-end cars. (Conversely, my Prius uses LED projectors.)

When you say radii requirement, you mean the ability to see the lights from both the front and the side of the vehicle?

Kinja'd!!! "yamahog" (yamahog)
03/27/2017 at 18:57, STARS: 0

Not necessarily the light cone - there are minimum radius requirements on physical parts themselves for pedestrian protection.

Ah, that kind of makes sense. If a headlight was 1" in diameter, and it stuck out from the rest of the front of the vehicle, and that vehicle and hit a pedestrian, it could totally dig into a person’s leg. In a case like the car above, though, it looks like it’d be simultaneous contact on several points.

Some day I’ll have to actually dig through all the regulations. I bet there’s some interesting stuff in there.
