Never understood how cars last this long in the PNW

I have a 25 year old 4Runner without a spot of rust and seemingly minimal effort to keep it that way over the years. Yes, I am smug.

Why have you not purchased this yet? Gotta get the car count up while it still drives your neighbor nuts.

Rain, clouds, and temperate weather (it doesn’t freeze much, doesn’t get too hot). As long as they don’t leak and they’re reasonably rustproofed (meaning they can survive rain without destroying the interior), a car can last almost forever here.

On the other hand: Electrical can be a little sketchy, wild animals seem to be more destructive, and plants (and even moss) can cause damage. They’re also more likely to die in wrecks due to the weather and abysmal drivers.

It’s a mixed bag, but survivors tend to be in really great shape. It’s a lot like the preservative properties of the desert southwest, except the rubber, paint, and interiors remain intact. For me, it’s a toss up of which environment is actually easiest on cars. From a long-term maintenance standpoint, I think it’s actually easiest in the PNW as long as you can keep leaks at bay.

Washington and Oregon do not use road salt when there is snow. There is also a lack of rain/snow in CA for most of the time, if not all.
