So the average cost of a new vehicle is $34,372 . And many people here on Oppo and Jalopnik have an affinity for old cheap cars. So my question to you is.

What car, for less than ten thousand, would you buy and then sink the rest of $34,372 in restoring/refreshing and upgrading it? It wouldn’t have to be your only car, but it would be your primary one. And what upgrades would you do?

I think I’d go with a Ford LTD with a mild engine build, swap for a more modern transmission (if applicable), a new paint job. And spend the rest of the money refreshing the interior and fixing convenience features etc.

Man, that would give me $31k to dump in the Cougar. That would be one sweet ride. I’m hoping to be all in the car for no more that $15k when I’m done.

I’d take my 1991 Prelude Si and do a full restoration on the body/suspension/etc, then somehow fit a K24Z7 in it.

A $24k restoration is gonna get you a lot more than what you just listed especially if the car already costs $10k If you have $24k to drop on restoring a car that already costs $10k, you’re going to have one sweet ride. $10k is gonna get you a pretty immaculate old car unless you’re buying something popular and expensive like an old VW van or Land Cruiser. Or you can just buy a very nice car that is already restored for around $20k depending on what it is. What I’m saying is, you can pretty much get whatever you want as far as older cars are concerned for $34k minus some of the collectors item models.

Most definitely a 98-2000 LS400 and then spend the rest retrofitting a S600 Biturbo V12 & drivetrain.

2003 Cadillac Seville STS. Ground up factor or better restore. Only upgrade would be a borla exhuasted. And maybe differnt wheels. But if for 34k I could have a factory fresh one I’d be so happy.

Normally I own SLS because ownership is slightly cheaper. But all in id take the STS.

at that $35k number, i could PROBABLY put 10 cars on the road, bought, running, and legal. they might not be too impressive looking (stock-ish trucks, big cars). my own personal project car, i am in for not quite $12k. it is THE expensive one, that everything has had to be fitted, moved, cut and modified for. just so that i can get that plain nothing special here look. i have actually kept tabs on most of its spending, so that number is fairly close.

Kinja'd!!!

one of the NEXT project cars, is going to be an all metal model t. i aim to keep some real deal numbers on spending. should be fun to see how much it takes to get it on the road. i am $500 into the shell(sight unseen).......

Kinja'd!!!

this is not it, but where i imagine i will be starting near.(hopefully).......

I’m not even a Mopar guy, but hear me out.

I’ve wanted a 1967 Newport wagon body on a modern truck chassis since I owned a Newport convertible.

Kinja'd!!!

Newports are practically worthless so I won’t bother to search for an example (my nice restored blue 2-door convertible 1967 I bought for $2500 and sold for $5500). They are cheap, so $10k budget for a nice one.

Onto some good affordable newish truck chassis, 4x4 cummins would be hilarious but I’d settle for chevy 5.3 on a budget. I’d keep stock truck height and run smallish wheels and tires as to not ruin the character of the wagon.

Already have the car (1968 Triumph 2000 Estate), and if it weren’t for it being on limited-mileage classic car insurance, I’d happily daily-drive it as it is right now.

As far as upgrades go, I’d love to drop in the fuel-injection setup that was a rare factory option (or maybe just do Megasquirt), and maybe a few suspension and brake upgrades. I wouldn’t even want to do a full restoration – the car has been in the family since new, and many of its battle scars have family history tied up in them. I’d just want to preserve it, maybe sort out some of the worst of the wear and tear, but if I took it back to factory-fresh condition, it would lose much of its character.
