Have any of you made suspension changes? One of my only issues with my Legacy is how it rides. The roads where I live are pretty shit, and the wagon doesn’t seem very happy with them. My E24 was probably the best riding car I’ve ever had, it floated over bumps and ruts. I’d like to be closer to that, ideally without switching to smaller wheels. I like my 5 spokes quite a bit. It’s only got 40k kms on it, so nothing is worn out, it’s just not very good stock struts, and low profile tires, I assume. I’ve found that Bilstein only makes front shocks, which isn’t super helpful. For ease of installation, I’m looking at coilovers. I’m assuming that most coilovers are designed with handling or stance in mind, so I’m not sure what to look at for a better ride overall. I’m fine if it lowers it a little bit, but something with enough adjustability to stay around stock height would be ideal. If this were an old BMW like I’m used to, I’d just do Bilstein HDs, since they ride wonderfully, but that’s not an available option I guess.

Here’s what this random website has for an 06 Legacy.

If I want to be real fancy, there’s Ohlins

So yeah, have any of you done anything like this, or know of anyone who has? I haven’t delved into Subaru forums at all, that’s my next step.

My Legacy for your time, also why I want to stay near stock height.

Outback struts for a cheap suspension lift?

The shocks and springs from an Outback should be bolt on, try those? I would imagine they have a softer spring rate and the shocks are not tuned as aggressive.

I know it’s not an Outback, but if these guys are half as helpful as the sf.org guys you’ll find your answers here;

ps, there is also the Legacy board;

My old GT wagon had some Koni shocks that had been installed by a previous owner. Personally I found them way too crashy. Didn’t feel particularly sold, just made it feel really jarring on rough pavement. No idea what springs were on the car but it was also way too low…not to a stanced out Yo Bro! level but too low for my liking and took away some utility from the vehicle I think.

That being said, I haven’t driven a GT wagon with stock suspension so can’t really say much as to whether it was better or worse than stock.

I know, but it’s possible to have a better ride than this on lower profile tires. My friends E39, also on 17s, rides way more comfortably

As far as I know, Outbacks have the same springs, just with spacers. And then extended strut housings, but the same strut. I could be wrong though

I don’t want a lift, I actually really like the ride height. I just want to drive over cracks and ruts in the pavement without getting crashed around so much

Unfortunately, there aren’t a ton of options short of full-on rally coilovers. It’s one of those things that happens when a car that has struts on all corners tries to be “sporty.”

Do they make Koni FSDs for the legacy? These are by far my favorite strut for most cars. They don’t make them for any of the Subarus I have just my VW. if not then check out http://get-primitive.com/ and put some outback suff on.

I run King Spring on my outback. I’m running factory OB height but with stiffer springs in the rear, it was much needed to stop the bouncing from the rear on bumps. Also, help stop the squat during acceleration....it was so bad you could feel the transmission move and shift gears were like trying to hit a moving target. I’d highly recommend outback Sturts and springs just with King Springs in the rear. The ride is much better on rough roads then the factory OB suspension.

But the easiest way is some sidewall.

I’ve always thought the outback rode a bit softer with a bit more body roll than the standard Legacy. I do know that they have changed the spring and shock rates through the years and it just depends on what car you have to what the settings are. My mom’s 2009 Impreza was completly different than my 2002 Impreza. Our impreza had a much more compliant ride and less body roll than her 2009, which felt like a poor ridding toyota carolla by comparison.
