Thought I was gonna die. Was lots of fun.

Kinja'd!!!

My parents found two of these (the other one is in the background) for sale and bought them both for $100. My stepfather got this one running, so I got to ride it for a few when I went to pick the kids up after work. Holy crap is this thing both scary and fun.

You pedal to get it going, then release the clutch on the handle to start the motor. The throttle is on the other handle along with a kill switch. Apparently it will do about 25 mph. I haven’t ridden a bike in years so it took a little getting used to. Once you let off the clutch, off you go!

These may be more popular in bigger cities, but down here in south Mississippi this is just something you never see. 10/10 would almost die again.

I used to have one of those, with the right gearing and state of tune they can do 60. Stopping from 60 on the other hand...

My eyes may be deceiving me, but it looks like it just has pedal brakes, if any brakes at all.

You almost certainly weren’t going to die.

Riding this thing for the first time down a hill turns boys into men.

I once did 42mph on a mobility scooter (overvolted and with the speed governor bypassed). Tried to slow it down and instantly tripped the overcurrent protection and it shut down leaving me with basically zero deceleration ability. Trying to get a 3 wheeled scooter to corner at 30+ mph is terrifying.

Wow. That would put hair on your chest.

Or rip it off.

That is correct. Thus the thought I was gonna die portion.

Kinja'd!!!

Story time. In a dumb experiment my friends and I once bypassed the speed governor on a mobility scooter like this one and overvolted the motor to 36v. I was clocked at 42mph on this terrifying deathtrap. When I went to try to slow down by driving the motor backwards it tripped some kind of overcurrent protection and shut off. This left me needing to get a 3 wheeled granny scooter to turn left at 35+ mph to avoid eating a chain link fence head on. By some miracle I managed to get around the corner and ran wide onto the grass. The grass provided enough resistance to slow me down to about 20 before I hit a divot and ate it big time. Needless to say we didn’t try that one again.

Meh, little of column A, little of column B. It was back when I was pretty sure I might be immortal.

Oh god, I bet!

Let me guess, no protective gear whatsoever?

That is impressive....and also not symmetrical in any way with all the random bike parts. :P

Of course not. Why would a couple of high schoolers think to use safety gear?

These things are so understressed. Just bypassing the limiter can get you up in the 20mph range.

That’s a great price! I see these on Craigslist all the time for $500-600, which is insane .... but a pair for $100 would make me whip out the cash and try not to die.

Indeed. Pretty neat thing if you ask me. It needs a little cleaning up and some sanding to get rid of the rust, but other than that it’s in good shape. My mother runs a flea market so she’s always finding deals on random stuff.

Safety gear for a high school boy was the wallet condom.

The derailers were an issue, but the structure held pretty well.

That’s epic! Sounds like something I would have done when I was younger. At least it ended better than it could have.
