Kinja'd!!!

Word is dealers in different states have been putting cash on the Bolt’s hood ranging from $2-$5 grand. Also dealers in smaller towns are having trouble getting people interested in it. February they sold 952. Anyone know how they are selling so far?

Automotive News says the pricing is all over the place and that they sold 2,693 between December and February:

bolt sounds like a knockoff of the Volt, and not in a good way. I didn’t know they were already on sale. The configurator doesn’t show the Bolt.

I still don’t think electric cars have gotten to the point of being convenient enough to appeal to your average consumer. Teslas and the like sell because they are a statement. The Bolt is just an electric hatchback from GM.

I saw 2,114 total for Jan and Feb. But I seen pricing all over the place as well.

Yea they’ve been on sale. I’ve seen one so far. The Volt has been outselling it though and I kind of feel like they overlap and not in a good way.

Even with gov’t incentives it’s still not a good deal. Up here they start at $42k. A top trim would come in just over $50k. The bolt in Ontario has a purchase incentive of $14k. Thats nice at $42k, but $14k off $50k is still too much for a Bolt.

Exactly this. And as Americans, we equate vehicle size with perception and price. The average consumer is going to see this for what it is before anything: a compact hatch. They are going to scoff when they see the price, which for a lot of people because of what I mentioned above, is high and still is even after tax credits.

Just let Consumer Reports give it the thumbs up and GM to push it as an EV CUV. Boom, triple that 952 monthly sales over night!

That’s what I just said to the other guy. Even after the credits its still pricey for being a compact hatch.

I can’t think of a reason why I would buy one of these over say a Mazda3 or equivalent from your manufacturer of choice.

Not that it means much, but I see quite a few of them on the road around here.

For a lot of people I would assume the fact that it’s electric isnt enough of an incentive to get it over a Mazda3 or Focus.

IIRC, it isn’t actually on sale in every state yet so I’m guessing anyone who wanted one in the states they’re for sale on already have one so now they’re having to put cash on the hood to sell more in those states. I also feel like GM *has* to anticipate this selling in low numbers because it’s an incredibly niche vehicle despite how good it is and how important it is in the terms of pushing EVs forward.

When you can get a Sonic in the low $20k range its cheaper to pay for gas, then paying $15k more. $15k can pay for lots of gas.

Up my way the Leaf is not a bad deal, you get a base for $34k minus $14k incentive. You pay $20k decent short commuter car.

Exactly. Like I said, it’s not exactly a representative sample.

That said, the Bolt seems like a great idea (not having driven one).

I was amazed at how small the Bolt actually is, it has less passenger volume than a Fit.

Of course you have to pay more if you’re using Monopoly money. Every car costs more Up There.

Its actually within like an inch or 2 of various measurements of the Sonic. Which makes me wonder why GM didn’t save development money and make a Hybrid and EV Sonic.

On the new side, you need a cheap lease and driving habits that fit within the strengths of an EV. Lots of short trips, lower speeds, stop & go city driving, etc.

With an EV you never need to stop for gas, and it always has a full battery as long as you keep it plugged in at home. You also will never need to do an oil change. The bump in your electricity bill will be much less than the cost of gas to drive the same distance in the same circumstances.

True but given where I live and my commute none of those things are true for me. While my parents are probably perfect for having one it will likely never happen as they don’t have a garage.

They appear to have missed the mark significantly. I just check Autotrader and I had to go 300 miles out to find a $40k small hatchback. I don’t foresee that ever working.

It does. This gen of Volt looks more like a normal car first that happens to be an ev while the Bolt and first gen Volt look like EVs that happen to be cars.

I’ll give them that on the first part but not the second. Also, if you want to make the first mass produced ev you shouldn’t roll it out state by state.

I was thinking about this a little bit more, and I think that even though the Bolt is quite a technical achievement, it exists in a no-man’s land for sales. For essentially the same price, you could have this similarly-sized, but much more nicely finished electric vehicle with the prestigious badge:

Kinja'd!!!

“But it only has 87 miles of range to the Bolt’s 238!” you say. But for the majority of people, I think that isn’t really a big deal. 87 is plenty to do everything you need to do in town in a day without any range anxiety, and 238 isn’t really enough for travelling city-to-city yet. Sure you can charge on the way, but 238 miles at highway speeds means driving for 3-4 hours before stopping for a couple hours to charge. That works for some trips, but still rules out most cross-state trips. Personally, I think EV’s really need to get to the 400 mile range line before they can really start to replace gas cars for anything other than city driving. Yes for some people the 238 is perfect - heck, it could get me from SA to Austin and back which is a trip that I make ofthen - and, yes, some people will replace a gas car with an EV with that kind of mileage and just rent a gas car for long trips. But I think for most people considering an EV something like a B250e or i3 that is nicer for the same price and has the enough city range, or even a plug-in EV like the A3 eTron that can do the commute and battery power for the lucky ones who have a charger at work. So the 238 is impressive, but most potential buyers probably still see it as a city car and that puts it up against competition that Chevy didn’t really think was going to be competition and they’ll have to throw cash at it to really drive sales.

For anyone living in a apartment. No real means to charge any plug-in type of vehicle limits the viability and appeal of this vehicle. Also the fact that resale value on any electric car is a big unknown.
