Now they know our pain when they are in the road. Also I know he’s being kinda silly but I kinda hate this guy

Being in NYC, if he had simply asked people to move they probably would have just said, “Fuck you.”

They hear and see the first and second bike, move out of the way of the first and then back into the way of the second.

If you must walk in the bike lane, you should at least keep aware that bikes will be coming towards you from both directions.

It’s a lot like the summit of Alpe d’Huez in the Tour de France.

I love yelling at people in the bike lane. A sharp “HEADS UP” while you’re barreling down on them is usually effective.

Really, looks more like a cluster f*** free for all with pedestrians walking on the bike lane because there isn’t a bike at that moment they moved into it and don’t see why they should move when a bike comes along. :)

The general rule in most areas is that cyclists are entitled to ride in the road “as far right as practicable” (this is not “as far right as possible”, but rather practicable - effectively, this means that the entire right lane, and any lanes needed to get over to a turn lane, is OK if the right lane isn’t wide enough to safely share with motor vehicles (14 feet wide is the standard for that AFAIK)). Conversely, pedestrians aren’t allowed to walk in cycling infrastructure unless it’s specifically shared-use. (Not sure about law there on this, though.)

I’d take it a little further and say that if one must be on foot in the bike lane, they have to run, not walk.

I think it’s New Years Day, so there is significantly more foot traffic than normal.

Except where there’s no dedicated bike lane, bikes are supposed to be in the road and not on sidewalks. Here, the cars on the road, the bikes are in the bike lane, and the walkers are not where they’re supposed to be. And I certainly can get as annoyed as anyone else when I am slowed down by a cyclist in the road, but I also bike — do you think if I had a choice, I’d be sharing a road with cars? Do you think I enjoy having a two-ton machine fly by me? Do you think I enjoy trying to take up as little room as possible only to have some asshat run me off the road because I had the temerity to make him change lanes or slow down for 15 seconds to pass me? Trust me, other than the asshat cyclists (and I concede that those people unfortunately exist as well), we know your pain and want to minimize it as much as possible.

This is related, but from the opposite side.

I used to cross the 79th street transverse in Manhattan daily. I could have taken the bus, but the bus sucked, and even if it ran on time, by the time everyone finished crowding in on Fifth Avenue, it was just about the same to just walk. I could have walked through Central Park, but I’m a smoker, so I preferred to just take the Transverse, so I could have a cigarette.

I was also in a bad mood, because I knew I would inevitably almost get hit in the crosswalk on the west side, by some impatient asshole turning off of the transverse onto CPW to go uptown.

Very, very few people actually use the sidewalks on the tranverses, since the park is right there and they’re loud and smelly and filled with garbage. As a result, at lot of bicyclists who aren’t comfortable riding on 79th street and too lazy to go down to 72nd or take one of the many bike paths in the park would ride on the sidewalk

Inevitably, a bicyclist would come up behind me and ask me to move over, ring their bell, or follow on my heels. I would have headphones in and pretend I didn’t know they were there. About half would give up and go around on the street (where they were supposed to be). The remainder would usually follow behind on my heels ringing their bell and trying to get around me. Eventually, about half of those would also give up. The rest would decide to start shit.

Per your “this being New York comment,” I had a script, and it went like this:

“Fuuuuck you! Get offa the fucking sidewalk, you fucking pussy. Write a fucking letter if you want a bike lane and get fucked!”

Usually, that scared them off, but if it didn’t, I’d flick a cigarette at them and give them the finger.

New York makes people do bad things.

Also, I should add that I’m an incredibly conscious driver when it comes to bicyclists. I now drive in Phialdelphia daily and I always check my mirrors, yield, and leave room between my car and the curb if there isn’t a bike lane. I just have zero tolerance for assholes riding on sidewalks.

There are three stages of anger for a bicyclist.

Bicyclist rides on roads, someone inevitably tells them, “who the hell do you think you are, you should be in the bike lane.”

Bicyclist heads to the bike lane, inevitably, bike lanes are insufficient, cars accidentally or intentionally venture into them. And someone tells cyclist “you should ride on paths.”

Bicyclist heads to a path, and there, people congregate 4 abreast, sometimes with headphones on, with the faintest clue of what’s going on around them. Cyclist at his usual cycling speed passes them, and the clueless user almost gets hit because they don’t know what on your left means, and says “go ride on the roads.”

The bicycle is an amazing tool of transportation and recreation for which you inevitably piss off 30% of all people no matter how correctly you use it. Also, the best way to relieve all of this anger is through singing, as shown by this video.

There aren’t really many bike paths in Central Park, as you are only allowed to ride on the roads. Since the park roads are all one way, it means you can’t easily cross through the park on a bike (at least in both directions), so taking the transverse makes sense, but yeah, if you do that you have to ride in the road (if doing so, be sure to have your middle finger handy for the cars).

Honestly, I’ve never ridden a bike in Central Park, so I had no idea. I always just assumed that they crossed the park.
