Kinja'd!!!

So I’m looking for new summer tires. My criteria: Grippy on paved corners, good in wet. My previous tires were MPSS (got them used) and they were just so much fun.

Ideal size is 235/50-17, OEM size was 215/55-17. Anything else really close in diameter is okay. I don’t need a ridiculous speed rating (that’s what my MPSS tires had) and I don’t care about driving in snow (I use snow tires for winter months). I can usually recommend a tire to somebody else, but I’m having a lot of trouble choosing for myself!

- The new Pilot PS2 tires look like what I want, but damn the price is high! (currently $216 ea on TireRack)

- I see a Bridgestone Potenza S-04 PP for only $133 ea. Anyone have history with them?

- I’m open to other ideas. I don’t like cheaply made/sketchy brands...

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

seems to be a good size calculator to find matching diameters.

(bumped for daytime views, so far I’m liking the thought of Conti DWs)

Update! (5/8/17) I went with the Continental ExtremeContact DW in 235/50-17. I love them! They are quiet and grip nearly as well as the MPSS, even in the rain! They were discontinued so I got them for about 1/2 the price of the MPSS (although they were harder to find), so if they last 1/2 as long I’ll be happy. So far I really, really like them. Thanks everyone for the opinions!

I’ve always liked the Indy 500 from Firestone. It doesn’t get a lot of love in the press/scene but it’s got way more performance than the price suggests.

I picked up the michelin primacy mxm4 for my a4 a couple months ago. Not quite as sporty as the mpss for sure. But they are all the grip I ever need for a DD and they are without question the most comfortable and quiet tires I’ve ever bought. Assuming your not going to autocross them, I would highly recommend looking into them

Thanks for the recommendation. INteresting - I don’t see the Primacy in that size but they do have a Pilot HX MXM4 in that size. BUT - it costs almost as much as the MP2! Yikes!

Interesting. They do get really so-so reviews, I’m not sure if I could go for them. I don’t like the way the tread looks either for my DD - but I should know better than to base my opinion on that ;)

No problemo, they had a rebate at costco and sam’s for $70 back when I bought them, might be worth looking into if you’ve got one nearby. Best tires I’ve ever used

S-04 is generally pretty similar to PSS but some folks have complained about crap tread life.

Tire Rack has the Continental DW on closeout in that 235/50-17 size for $90 each. I had a set of them several years ago. More comfy than other max performance summer tires but less sharp steering turn-in feel.

Firestone Firehawk Indy 500 is the current hot cheap performance tire but it’s got a bit of a stiff ride.

I have the Bridgestone S-04s on the summer wheels for my GTI. No complaints. Handled wet weather just fine last summer. I never felt like I was nearing their limit during regular spirited driving either.

2016 GTI with the Performance Package; stock tune.

Haha. I think it may depend on the car. I have a Lancer Ralliart. It’s relatively heavy. Right now I have a set of G-FORCE SPORT COMP-2's. Those are absolute garbage.

I sent the wrong link before. I liked the Wide Oval (the higher performance) version:

Have you looked at Uniroyal Rainsport 3's? If you can get your hands on these, it’s a fantastic tire - nothing gets even close in the wet, and it is also very good in the dry, with the only real problem being that the tires do overheat after some abuse.

Oh, and they likely won’t last very long, which might be a deal breaker.

Other than that, it’s a fantastic tire for everything summer can throw at you. Heck, it’s even pretty good on gravel.

Dunlop direzza ZII star spec. I drive on them year round in Seattle, absolutely incredible in rain. Better than any all seasons I’ve tried in terms of wet grip. And dry grip is fantastic as well. A bit spendy, but they last awhile and are constantly rated highly.

Now, if there’s even a hint of snow you might as well just push your car in front of an oncoming truck but it sounds like that won’t be an issue. The ONLY problem I can think of that’s relevant is they are a bit noisy

To jump on the Continental DW train, they recently redesigned the summer ExtremeContact (might still be called the DW, they might have changed it to something like the ExtremeContact Sport) for better sidewall characteristics and dry performance. I have DWs as my summer tire and they perform quite well.

I picked up some Continental Extreme Contacts a couple months ago and I love them. By far the nicest tires I have ever had, the only problem is that they are a bit spendy. They worked great in the snow, ice and wet during winter and I don’t imagine having any problems during the summer.

I know. I love my old MPSS tires. I just balk that they are double the price of some of the other summer high performance tires... but my experience should sell me on these. I might give the Conti DWs a try, they are half the price - if I get half the life out of them at least I will know. And if I don’t like the performance... back to MPSS. You get what you pay for!

I had some conti’s that were brand new on the Genesis I bought, Contisport Contact plus or some crap. They had literally the worst wet weather traction of any tire I’ve ever had. They were brand new. I replaced them with the PSS’ and never looked back.

Interesting. I think they sell a different (cheap) tire to OEMs - so do many brands. too bad because it gives the whole brand a bad rep. Unfortunately a lot of brands do this and I’ve heard a lot of “I’ll never buy brand xxx tire because they came on a car I bought and were horrible...” - even for Michelin! It’s all about the tire, not the brand.

Interesting point of view. I said this to another commenter as well - it’s about the tire, not the brand. Many brands sell cheap crappy tires and it gives the brand an undeserved bad rep. Firestone does make good tires. I have a set of Destination LE2s on my ‘73 LeSabre and they are excellent tires. But they have a different purpose. The best advice when it comes to Firestone tires is not to follow Ford’s air pressure requirements.

Destinations are fine, I’ll give you that. But I’ve worked for firestone, and experience different tire models on a daily basis. In general, firestones have no grip and are loud. In general, bridgestones wear very poorly. I don’t have a problem with Bridgestone truck/suv tires though, they seem to be pretty decent. Potenzas and pole positions kind of blow. Turanzas aren’t bad.
