Kinja'd!!!

All the rental cars in Riyadh are little white Hyundais. They’ve all been wrecked, and many have no bumpers. I often wondered where all the bumpers went..... One day while teaching my son to drive on the outskirts of town, we stumbled onto the eerie final resting place of all the bumpers sacrificed to the gods of speed. Nearby there was an ancient couch, upon which it was written:

“Don’t text and drive assholes”

Although it was in Arabic, and I don’t read Arabic. But that’s probably what it said.

I wonder how much money you could get for recycling all of that plastic?

Riyadh was always a free for all even when I lived there.

We always travelled in a five or six Land Cruiser FJ60 convoy to the sukh or to the airport at night.

But with big British Aerospace (British Aircraft Corporation as it was then) triangles on the front doors.

Cool! I drove a Yukon XL because I couldn’t buy a tank.

My dad had a Dodge Royal Monaco.

I can remember when a tornado came through the compound two kilometres south of Riyadh. The breeze block boundary wall fell down, two blocks rested on the bonnet and one caved in the windscreen, the next door neighbours green Mazda 323 was virtually destroyed.

It wasn’t just the south of the city but any place westerners lived or gathered was a target for the South Yemenese. They thought that if they targeted foreigners in Saudi that Saudi would stop supporting the North Yemenese with weapons and ammunition. Families were sent home.

We used to have a good time making our own beer and had a close Anglo-sphere relationship (British, Canadian, Australian, New Zealander and American).
