Like seriously... What specific problems are these old Maseratis known for? SPECIFICALLY. Not just, it’s a Maserati so it sucks and will break.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

It’s a true manual 6-speed so it doesn’t have that pesky cambriocorsa flappy paddle system. And it’s so cheap! Link if Kinja’d.

VIN is ZAMBC38A930010802 in case anybody is interested in looking into its history.

Well, they’re known for increasing your awesomness, sometimes beyond what a body is able to handle. You could either die, or level up. It’s really a crapshoot at that point.

I don’t think they necessarily have any issues. When something breaks it will be very expensive.

I’ve never read about any problem with the engine in those except for ticking if you don’t change the only at regular intervals. That being said the cats are built into the headers and they cost a shitload to replace.

I know they have an issues with their VVT/VANOS/VTECH system.

Jeebus that price seems low. The crappy cambiocorsa is the only specific I know of. With 3 pedals and an NA v8, this seems sooo tempting at that price. And damn the mileage.

Buy it and it will change your life. Either by bringing you glory and happiness, or by leaving you a burned out shell. Who knows which one?

Step 1 - ask for copies of the service history;

Step 2 - research known problems online and see what hasn’t been done;

Step 3 - have a PPI.

So it’s normally $13,500, but on sale for the low price of $19,995. Makes sense. I’d rock one.

Lots of Maserati’s here in NC. Greensboro especially. Not to say it will run forever but it must be decent to get up over 100k miles. That’s averaging 6-7k miles a year so definitely a driver.. I’m in Raleigh but my dad lives in Greensboro. You local or just find this through the web?

Wheeler dealers did an episode on one and there was a throttle position sensor issue thats common on them. Was a specialist repair but i dont think it was crazy expensive. Worth a watch if youre thinking of buying one.

Ferrari V8 means 10-15k mile service intervals for lots of different bits and pieces. Also the electronics were a bit crap so power seats, radio, HVAC might be wonky. Suspension was pretty conventional from what I remember and the car was a great GT coupe on that front IIRC.

A mentor of mine has turned wrenches for most his career as an indy import and exotic guy. I’ve asked him the same question about these 6 speed cars (and from the vantage point of one who has also turned wrenches for a living in the past). His answer was that parts prices and electronics will eat you alive at some point. Being an Italian, not only are the prices as you would expect, but availability is always an issue too. The Italians fill part orders on their schedule, not yours.

The other issues he mentioned was the constant electrical gremlins on these cars combined with diagnostic challenges. He said there is only so far one go on diagnostics on these cars without dealer level equipment, as so many components and modules are coded to the car and/or required learning procedures that the average bear can’t access. He said his shop recently purchased a 40k computer that speaks late model Italian at the dealer level, so they charge customers accordingly. His advise to me was to only do one of these cars if you can consider the purchase price a down payment on the ownership experience. There doesn’t appear to really be an Italian equivalent to Durametric that let’s owners and lower level Indy shops do much of what a dealer can in the Porsche world.

Yea, I wouldn’t seriously consider this unless the indie euro shop that services my S600 said they were totally confident in their ability to care for the car. I mean, they have had Aston Martins on their lot before so I presume they could handle some light exotic work, but it would be a conversation I would have to have first. But if push comes to shove, there are 2 Maserati Dealerships where I live now since the new Ghibli and Levante are getting popular.

The issue I’ve seen is almost all the parts are dealer only. Very little available in aftermarket. If you can DIY much of your repairs you might be okay, if you have no major issues. If you pay to get things repaired you need deep pockets.

Even the RockAuto website which usually has a connection for almost any car doesn’t even have filters for it. They have pads, sparkplugs, trans overhaul kit, wipers and washer pump other than some accessories. Thats it nothing else. No gaskets,no tie rod ends, no wheel bearings, no switches, no filters, no water pump, no fuel pumps,no coils, nothing , nada, zip. You would be at the mercy of dealership, wrecking yards or random on-line resellers.

My wisdom would be if you were buying one to hang onto, then you should buy a wrecked one as a parts car. It would likely be cheaper in the long run.

The Coupes are known to have electrical gremlins. The Gran Sport fixed many of the problems with the Coupe but F1 only. Two of my friends have the GS (‘05 and ‘06) and they have been reliable. If you do the aftermarket software on the transmission and drive it correctly, clutch wear is minimal. One of the cars has 80k+ miles and his clutch wear averages 1% per 1000 miles. New clutch at a Ferrari/Maserati dealer is $2500. Overall, not bad running costs for a car that looks and sounds that beautiful.
