Trying my best to fill those wheel wells with 245/40R17 Bridgestone RE-71R on 17x9 ET48 TRMotorsport C3, rolled rear fenders, and a generous amount of negative camber (-2.8F/-2.5R). Previous rubber was a set of ZIIs (non-Star-Spec) in 235. I seem to have picked up a touch of rub on the fronts under heavy compression (which requires a pretty substantial bump or dip in the road) but otherwise no issues. Can’t wait to see how well they live up to the hype once autocross starts up next month.

Up next: OSGiken LSD and a new tune calibration (to account for a new intake + switching tune provider)

What a coincidence. My girlfriend just sent me this after being awoken by the doorbell:

I’m picking up a used set of star specs today for my Miata. Excited to have a nice “new” set of tires for this season of autocross. I am also going to be doing STR this year (coming from CSP last year). Basically the only thing putting me there were the tires (Hoosiers are fun!). But since I have street tires and only STR mods anyways, that will be a more suitable class. Although the NCs and s2ks are definitely going to beat me constantly either way. I’ll be running stock sized 205 but such is life.

I see you forgot to warn her that you were spending money.

Are the RE-71's as good as people say? I ran the Star Specs in 205/50R15 last year and am considering switching to the RE-71 (in the same size) this season.

Hard to say definitively at this point, since I only have a few days of street driving (plus a few test maneuvers around a parking lot while checking for rubbing) on them, but they do already feel like a decent improvement over what I had previously. The consistent rave reviews are largely responsible for my decision, but what helped cement it was the handful of ride-alongs I got in similar ST* cars with various tires last year. They just felt like they had more grip to work with and were putting down faster times as well. There’s a chance some of the other new 200TW tires for this year may give the RE-71Rs a run for their money, but it’s still too early to know for sure and I didn’t have enough life left in my ZIIs to wait and find out.

Considering how many cars at Solo Nationals ran with them, I think it’s pretty obvious they’re the tire to beat once again. Here’s the link to Nationals results:

That said, they die fast if you plan on using them as daily tires. A WRX local to our region went through two sets last year because she autocrossed almost every other weekend along with two or three track days and daily driving on them.
