either a 407D or a vario

these things are PAINFULLY cool and retro. and the 407 came with the OM616 diesel, the million mile engine. I need one. Girlfriend thinks I’ve lost my mind though.

I’d rather have this M-B L 409. Note the absence of letter D which makes this significantly better.

Yes. A diesel is only cool when it’s a 2-stoke diesel.

We had a few two stroke buses in the 1980s and 1990s.

Not cool, just noisy and leaked oil from every pore. They came with Allison automatics which did the same.

I don’t live long enough to drive so much...

I might consider commuting with a bus, if they would still have 2-stroke engines...

Here we go. Bombardier/GAC KD.

Detroit Diesel 6V71 engine, Allison V730 three speed gearbox.

They chose the engine/gearbox combination because they had a reputation for reliability. Susprisingly they were somewhat more efficient than the Leyland engines and SCG Pneumocyclic gearboxes used previously. In use they were very noisy under acceleration and the gearbox used the lowest possible gear at all times so third gear was something only rarely used in town. Both engine and gearbox leaked oil and the box would lose gears as the oil lever dropped.

No more were bought and the next bus order had proper DAF engines and ZF boxes.

Our modern buses are usually built on Volvo or Scania chassis with some Mercs appearing last year.

We have had a handful of 4-cylinder 2-stroke buses. But I think that none have survived. Most of these lost their 2-stoke engines while they were still in use. Here’s one built by Kabus.

Our buses are now mostly Volvo or Scania, while M-B, Iveco, VDL, MAN and Solaris hold marginal market.

I would love to grab one from somewhere if I had a garage or anywhere to put it, or more money, or... I have a W123 diesel

Here’s one of the Leyland ones:

And here’s how the Pneumocyclic gearbox was operated. Exposed gate, just like a Ferrari.

I think we had some buses with this kind of gearbox. I actually have couple of emblems in my garage from a Leyland Leopard that probably had one. The large one looks like this. I have no idea what to do with it. Maybe I should send it to the video’s bus enthusiast.

Here’s one surviving and moving Leopard.
