Auto/no flash, JPEG, minor adjustments. Just caught the end of the light outside, and then some more indoors. When I have more time outside with light, I’ll do some stuff in RAW and not auto settings, and see what that yields.

I couldn’t decide where I liked the focus better, so I just included both versions.

Nice choice. I rock a D5200. All the DX Nikons have pretty much the same sensor now, I think the current gen might have .1 MP more (24.1 vs 24.2), so it might have slightly better low-light capabilities.

The best thing you can do for it is to buy a better lens. The 18-55mm that it most likely came with is a decent lens, but once you put some good glass on it, you’ll think you got a whole new camera.

Thanks! Yeah this one is 24.something, my D5100 is 16 I think.

So I’ve heard, I’ve been looking at lots of different lenses, I’m likely gonna wind up with an ultra wide, a prime, and a replacement for the 18-55. Maybe a Sigma 17-50, I’ve heard lots of good things about that.

Sigma makes good lenses. The only complaint that I’ve heard (and I can’t speak to this personally) is that some them focus slowly, or slower than you like if you are shooting something that is moving.

I’ve been needing a new long lens for a while. I have some old, fully manual one. It takes great pictures, but I need auto focus and VR on a long lens for some stuff.

I’m considering saving up a little more than I planned and just getting the Nikon AF-S 28-300 ED VR. There are good deals on clean used ones, so I might not have to drop $1000 on it.

I’ve read that too. I generally don’t take pictures of any moving targets so I don’t imagine it will be too much of an issue for me, but I’m still in the research stage for sure.

That’s not bad at all. I doubt I’ll ever get anything other than the 55-200 that came with this, I hardly ever want much zoom. I always find myself wanting wider instead.

The bulk of my shooting is not moving objects, but after the Grand Prix Of St Petersburg the other weekend, it’s time to just throw down. I got some cool shots from where I ended up on Sunday, but the old lens was not cutting it. It works pretty well when the cars are maybe 60ft away going slower through a corner. But tracking them at 150ft away at 150mph, it was difficult to keep focused and I had to resort to much quicker shutter speeds to counter vibrations.

Oh yeah fair enough. Well as far as I’ve read, the 55-200 VR that I have, and the longer one you’re looking at are supposed to be quite good

The 55-200VR is very good. I had one. It, with the rest of my gear, was stolen three years ago. I would shoot concerts with it. It produced super crisp images, and focused like a champ in the dark.

But now, after rebuilding my gear collection, the stop-gap long lens needs to be replaced. I’ve put it off because lenses aren’t cheap and there have been more important things that needed to be taken care of first. But I think I can make this happen in the next month or two.

Oh man that sucks :/ I’m glad you’re rebuilding your collection though. I still need to build mine, now that I’m trying to get more serious about my photos

Yeah, the shitty thing is that one typically keeps all their gear in one easy to carry bag. Which is an easy to steal bag. Aside from needed a modern long lens, I’ve got much better gear now.
