G27 Wheel Still Shit, Sky Blue, Water Wet

Had a bit of time yesterday while the stream of the 12h of Sebring was in the nth caution and I had no other pressing matters, so I took my G27 apart to epoxy the encoder wheel to the motor shaft, since it turns out they all break the same way and always have since the G25 .

Today, after replacing yet another failed Summit-branded ignition coil in the Crown Vic (which in the ultimate irony failed on the way to Summit to pick up Chevelle parts), I figured I’d give it a try. After it started up and did the self-calibration, it was slightly off-center. Within 1 lap of Spa, my wheel was 90 degrees to the left again to go straight.

At this point I don’t know if I should cut my losses and give up on having a racing sim, or spend more than I’ve bought cars for and get a Fanatec setup.

If nothing else, I’m sure I’ll tear this one apart yet again to try to figure out what the hell is going on. 1/10 would not recommend (would be 0/10 but it did work for about 16 hours when brand-new).

Do you know of a way to fix this before it becomes a problem?

Encoders have always been an issue for G27. Mine hasn’t gone yet, but the gears are feeling sloppy around center. Depending on your budget it may be worthwhile checking out a TMX, bearing in mind you’d get pretty basic pedals.

Other than not buy a Logitech wheel (which at this point is my top suggestion)? No. I don’t see any way to prevent it; it’s a cheap plastic disc pressed on to a metal shaft. It has to be tight to not move around, which means it will crack (then move around). Someone over in Europe I think sells brass replacement encoder wheels which is what should have been used in the first place.

Fanatec pedals and shifters can be used standalone, so I had been thinking about slowly transitioning over (e.g. get the shifter, then later on the pedals, then later on the wheel) but I don’t think that sequence can work backwards (i.e. use the fanatec wheel with logitech pedals/shifter).

Don’t get me started on the massive slop on-center this thing had new out of the box. I almost returned it the first day I plugged it in; in hindsight I should have.

Mind you, plastic wheels on metal shafts can be done to great effect - the IBM Selectric did it, and while that gear failing is what takes most Selectrics out, that’s after decades of service.

It’s just that you have to manage the stresses properly, and it looks like Logitech didn’t consider how much torque was going to be placed on the wheel?

Yeah I guess they key in my above reply is it’s a cheap disc. Probably the cheapest, most brittle plastic they could find with way more interference fit than it would need so that they wouldn’t have to throw any out for being out of tolerance (the handful of wheels which don’t break are probably the ones with holes on the large end of the spectrum, so there’s less force while jammed on the shaft).

This is an optical encoder wheel - it has no force on it other than its own centripetal acceleration when the motor spins (and the light shining on it). Nothing breaks it other than its own poor design.

I’ve fixed my G25 using a simple fix with a washer as it had this issue the first week after buying it used. Still works after several months without problems. There is a guide here:

Trust me...get the Fanatec, you won’t regret it.

Good deal on this one too

I’m was looking at the ClubSport v2.5/3/whatever it is on their site the other day. Looks like good stuff (better be at $1300 for a setup)

Ha! I found that thread while researching the issue. Small world.

I looked through my hardware and couldn’t find any washers the right size. I’ve put JB weld on the wheel itself, including in the crack and securing it to the shaft. I don’t know how it’s still losing calibration.

I shouldn’t say anything-don’t want to jinx myself-but my G25 still works perfect. I bought it the week they came out-and put on maybe 10 hours a week every week since. Thumbs up for the Fantec pedals-they were a big step up.

Once the encoder goes, does the wheel feel numb and not really have much vibration or ffb?

No, it just loses track of where it is, so where center is drifts over time. At the beginning of the lap, the wheel is straight to go straight. By the end of the lap, you have the wheel 90 degrees to the left to go straight. Mine seems to always drift left (anti-clockwise) and I’ve not let it go long enough but I bet after a little while you’d end up on the physical limit of the wheel to be going straight.

Oh mine hasn’t had that problem yet but it is still a piece of shit. Does your wheel have actual ffb and vibration in games or just the center spring? Mine stopped having any feeling whatsoever after logitechs drivers decided to not work on my pc.

There is still feedback in my case. Not sure what to suggest with the driver outside the usual remove-restart-reinstall
