Dang - this thing is fast (relatively speaking, mind you...)

The newish computer, that is, not the train.

I know there are faster systems out there these days, but they cost considerably more than I’m willing to spend right now; heck, a decent CPU is probably more expensive than my total investment in this box. Even though this $200 HP i7 is 4 or 5 years old, it’s amazing how quick it is in comparison to the once fast high-end AMD system I built back in 2011. On that system, Train Simulator with moderate settings would net me about 18-22 FPS IIRC (that may have been with the dual 9800GTs and not the GTX670). I installed that program in this new machine last night, and even at maximum detail settings I was getting about 70-80 FPS, with the occasional brief dip into the mid-40s when things got hairy. FSX should run just fine, and even LockMart’s Prepar3d should run OK. And this is with a relatively old GTX670 video card. It’ll probably be quicker if I pick up even a newer 4GB card (Prepar3d is said to run best on 4GB cards). I just need to find someone that frequently updates video cards to the latest and greatest so that I can scrounge up their unwanted leftovers.

I am truly befuddled at how my original copy of Microsoft Train Simulator runs so much better than TS: 2017. It’s literally the same game but with “engine improvements”.

I recently stumbled across my copy of MSTS and may give it another shot. Yeah, the graphics are somewhat crude by comparison, but it was a lot of fun back in the day. TS2017 does take quite a bit of horsepower, and their new offering, CSX Heavy Haul or whatever it’s called, seems to need even more power than this i7 can muster. How? Why? It can’t be that much better...

Yeah that game has a charm that the modern games really lack and I’m shocked that Dovetail didn’t make performance their main objective with CSX.

I’ll definitely post a few once I get it installed and configured. Most of my flying is in turboprops around the Hawaiian islands, usually in the Twotter or Beechcraft Duke Turbine. Pistons are too slow, and I prefer frequent takeoffs and landings to simulating the long-haul experience, although I do find the accurate representation of most modern aircraft to be pretty impressive. Years ago I did a flight from SFO to LAX in the Level-D 767 whilst simultaneously watching an old VHS tape that was designed to introduce airline pilots to this fancy new FMS thing. I went through the same programming steps and procedures, and was amazed at how well flight sim version matched up to a multi million dollar full-motion training device.

I don’t know why, but I find it incredibly amusing to think that NJ Transit trains are in a train simulator.

Also, those car numbers are off. They should be 4 digits. I know this because cars ending in 0 or 2 have bathrooms.

Well, “engine improvements” can result in much, much higher demand on resources. And, MSTS is so woefully outdated that it outright crashes on modern hardware.
