Kinja'd!!!

A taxi driver is dead nearly a kilometre from my house after a driver lost control, hit a pole, veered into traffic, and collided head-on with the taxi. Driver sustained minor injuries, and police are now investigating.

Thing is, I’m going to go ahead on a rant and assume the driver of the Mercedes was driving like an idiot. The speed limit on the road is 50 km/h. Traffic usually moves at 55 or 60, and 70 isn’t unheard of. If you’re travelling eastbound, like the Mercedes, you’re coming up a hill from the valley, and the road pinches at the top of the hill.

Now, at 50 or 55, you’re not going to lose control. I drove the road at that speed last night, and while it was a little damp, the road surface was fine. So three things would cause the driver to lose control, in my mind: speed, distracted driving, or mechanical failure.

Knowing the neighbourhood and seeing that it’s a newer vehicle, speed and distracted driving are the more likely culprits. My buddy and I coined the phrase “too rich to stop” as the motto for the neighbourhood, as people rarely stop at the stop signs here. I’ve nearly been hit multiple times here, as people take stop signs as suggestions and tend to go speeding through the neighbourhood. I don’t exactly feel safe here, as a pedestrian, or as a driver.

Maybe I’m being judgemental, so I’m probably wrong in all this, but Oppo, do me a favour: keep focused on the road and the speed limit and drive safe. I was driving this road last night, so the fact that a few hours later a man was killed here is kind of a shock. If you’re running late, you’re going to be late, that happens. If you see an important email on your phone, pull over and check it. If you wanted to do some “spirited driving”, save that crap for the track. You’re not on a closed course, no matter how talented you think you are. I don’t want to die because someone overevaluated their skills behind the wheel.

Anyway, that’s my Sunday morning rant. If anyone needs me, I’ll be double checking every car approaching me and hoping that I’m not next.

Save it for Forza or Gran Turismo. If you absolutely mist drive like a dick, do it away from everyone else, minimise the risk to others, could you imagine having a wreck and killing someone and having to live with that?

I can’t. But then again, foresight for your actions is apparently a difficult thing. I know a lot of people who think “well that won’t happen to me”.

I wouldn’t be surprised if alcohol was a factor.

Early morning, douchebag hair in a GLE Coupe...

Is that a GLC or GLE coupe? I can’t tell these days. In any case, the the contributing factor for fatality was due to huge weight differential between the two vehicles

Well it’s more of an educated guess. GLC launched way later than the GLE, so the lease rates would probably have started dropping on the GLE already, plus I have seen way more GLEs than GLCs so far.

As for the factor... I was referring to how the accident happened in the first place, much less the fatality.

It would make too much sense the GL*C* to be the coupe. So it is in fact a GLE Coupe.

“don’t drive like an arsehole” very wise words indeed.
