Drawers? No, I Can't Afford Drawers

I’ve been in pursuit of enhancing my Land Cruiser’s storage capability, and ideally I would have liked drawers. But a pair of drawers is like $1300, so nah bro, I can’t afford that. But can I afford $200? Sure, I can afford $200.

This is a pair of 25 gallon Husky job boxes fitting with Tetris-like precision in the cargo area of my FZJ80. Outside of the truck, they look like this:

They are, in fact, pretty sweet. Made in USA too, which I always like, and go for $60 a pop. My plan is to build a shelf around them, basically raising the floor of my cargo area by a foot or so and storing these bad Larrys underneath. They have an advantage over drawers in that I can totally remove them from the vehicle, but a disadvantage in that I have to pull them all the way out onto the tailgate to open them. Once they’re out, they’ve got wheels and an extendable handle, making them an excellent mobile toolbox platform.

I’m going to take the truck over to my dad’s in a little bit and we’re going to sketch it out. He’s an engineer by trade, so he’s pretty good at this sort of thing. I like the direction it’s heading though, certainly a promising start to the project that they fit perfectly.

I would put wheels forward so you can roll them out.

?

With the wheels back they’re just a tiiiiiiny bit too wide to fit between the wheel wells. Like the width of the carpeting away. You can force them with minimal effort though, I’ll likely put them in that way because they’re not going in and out all the time.

I can see that now.

I removed my rear seat and plan on extending the cargo area forward to where the seat was with plywood.

Sweet, those look really good.

You can spend the rest on recovery gear!

Same basic thing I’m doing here, just with the third row out. I need the second row because I’ve got a kid, otherwise I’d be going full length bed shelf here, haha.

I’ve been planning on building a shelf in the back of my XJ myself. Have a drawer set up for a jack and some tools and the rest of the area for a full size spare. Then I still have space up top for practical usage!

Exactly. Its really just wasted room, I’m never going to stack anything to the roof in the back of my truck. If I’m going to do that, I’ll rent a trailer. Going a step even further, I just bought a thing from Blue Ridge Overland called a Land Cruiser Attic, just a webbed netting that you hang from the 2nd and 3rd row grab handles where you can put clothing and light stuff. I don’t really want a big roof basket, so this is going to let me maximize the hell out of what space the FZJ80 has...which is shockingly little, its not nearly as big a vehicle as I thought it was before I bought it.

Currently I’m trying to figure out how to best use all the space in my Jeep. I never really thought of it until I decided a friend and I should take a road trip. One night may require camping and it takes a ton of stuff. I refuse to put stuff on my roof especially when driving nearly 1800-1900 miles in something that already gets less than admirable gas mileage.

Got a trailer hitch? Harbor Freight sells some really nice hitch mount cargo carriers for under a hundred bucks, strap your stuff to it with a tarp over it and free up all sorts of space inside. Probably won’t kill your mileage like a roof basket would.

That may be the perfect solution.

Even better, do what I did and weld legs to the bottom of the rack and cram it into the cargo area for a very inexpensive shelf.

That’s also a great idea.
