Detroit-area oppos, I need some advice

I found out that I’m one of two “finalists” for a position at FCA’s Tech Center in Auburn Hills, so I’ve started looking into accommodations. I’ve been told that Ferndale and Royal Oak are nice areas for “young professionals”, while Rochester Hills and the like are more for families. I’d like to keep my commute under 30 minutes, but I’m not familiar enough with traffic patterns to judge; my guess is that people are generally commuting IN to Detroit for work, so I would potentially be heading the opposite direction of rush hour traffic?

Seems like my primary issue is going to be finding places with garages for my cars (I rent garages in my current complex for the Lotus and Shelby); seems like most of the apartment complexes up there only have open lots and carports?

Any advice regarding areas to look at and/or avoid, as well as things to do in area would be greatly appreciated. My only friend up there lives in Ann Arbor, so his input was somewhat limited.

On a young professional side of things Royal Oak and Ferndale really are your best bet. For the most part other areas are either very expensive or are very family focused.

A lot of the affordable stuff in Royal Oak and Ferndale are small houses with maybe a 1-car garage, or one level of a duplex (flat) with no garage. Or high priced loft apartments downtown in Royal Oak with (maybe) parking garage access. Cities like Rochester Hills and others in that area are a blend of old, small houses from the ‘50s which were originally cottages and a bunch of McMansions.

I live in Novi which is about 45 min from downtown detroit and about 40 min to Auburn hills. I used to work next Chrysler headquarters and it would take only a half hour in the summer.Don’t go any farther west than me the traffic will kill you. If your going to need garage space look into Commerce or Walled lake lees expensive than Royal Oak but not as trendy. Some parts of Waterford are nice especially by the lakes. Stay out of Pontiac.

If you’ve never been to the Henry Ford museum and greenfield village its a must.

What I would say is covered byothers . Ferndale and Royal Oak are “the place” for young professionals but garages of decent size or at all will be a bit harder to find. I don’t work up the direction of Auburn Hills so can’t give any more info on that way.

Ferndale and Royal Oak are pretty good options, especially with that commute in mind. It’s still going to be busy during rush hours, but most I-75 traffic is going to be moving south in the morning, and north in the evening. And make no mistake, it does get pretty bad along that entire stretch between Detroit and Clarkston. It doesn’t take much for a “45-min commute” to inflate to over an hour.

M-59 is a quite a bit lighter, but it’s a bit of a bottleneck getting through Pontiac, and over by M-53 it gets pretty crowded.

Rochester is a nice area as well but traffic on Rochester Rd can be bad after 3:00 p.m..

There are some nice places in Bloomfield township as well, but you’re into the family type home, bigger lot sizes like Rochester hills, but less taxes. RO and ferndale are probably the place for younger folks, but if you’re looking at family life in the near future, you can go to Rochester hills, Clarkston, auburn hills. Just beware the school district, the Pontiac school district runs into parts of auburn hills, so that will hurt resale. The homes in the Avondale school district provide good value for the money, but you can get stuck with Troy or rochecster hills taxes. My family and I are in Sterling Heights, and that’s a very inexpensive place to be. Nice sized homes and cheaper taxes than anything in Oakland county, but the schools aren’t much to shout about. We are actually looking to move to the Troy/rochester hills/Bloomfield hills area, but we’re in no rush, but there are lots of options. There is a really nice subdivision off Hamlin road, but the homes are pricey, I’m not sure of your budget.
