Well, be prepared to fucking pay for it! This is how much it cost me today in toll only to drive 160km (100 miles) on the freeway. 4530 yen. 40$...

Then add about 3000yen in gasoline because rotary life...

Kinja'd!!!

When driving is more expensive than freaking flying, there’s something wrong :)

How many potholes you run into during that drive, tho.

I guess it in part explains why the Japanese frequently drive those Kei cars.

I drove 850 km yesterday, mostly through Germany. It cost me €0 in tolls and €50 in fuel. So less than your 160 km trip.

Potholes, none. Fucked expansion joints that are the equivalent of running straight into a sidewalk and the left lane being unusable due to trucks ruts making my car go all over the place? Constantly. Japanese freeway are nowhere nearly as good as French or German ones... They kind of suck actually

Driving a keicar will only save you on gas really... It would only have been like 250 yen less in toll if I were to drive one.

take the back roads?

And do the same trip in 4 hours instead of 1h50 minutes?

Try something out. Google map Nagoya -> Tokyo. See how long it takes by car... Then select “avoid tolls” and see the difference..

Sounds like midwestern US freeways.

I’m wondering how much subsidy is going in every direction - is the tolling closer to a fair representation of the costs of individual freeway travel? Is the airfare heavily subsidized? How would rail travel compare, cost-wise?

Nothing is subsidized... Using the freeway is insanely expensive for no good reason. And not taking it make your trips 3 times longer on average. Taking the train where I was going would have taken 8hours.

Googled Nagoya to Tokyo and got this result

Now select “don’t use toll roads”...

Have you thought about installing an ETC card system? I went to Japan over Christmas and we found that with a card, you tend to save about 30%-ish?

Kinja'd!!! "Flavien Vidal" (flyingfrenchy)

No, you don’t save anything with ETC. Same price. Also this was paid with my ETC card, I just didn’t use the machine as I never took the time to install it.

OUCH!

train or plane would make much more sense.

Taking the Shinkansen would cost roughly 100$ one way. Taking the regular train would cost 40$ but takes 4-5 hours, involve multiple changes and standing for long period of time because there is no place to sit so... Taking the plane would cost 90$ but then you have to go to and from the airport so...

toll road then is best option.

Well, not necesarily... Going to Tokyo from Nagoya costs roughly 8000 yen in toll (70$). Then you have to keep in mind that you will need 5 to 6000 yen in gas if you own a rotary like me and finally, you have to park your car in Tokyo, which costs about 3000 yen for 24 hours. Sooooo....

Realistically, the Shinkansen is the best idea if you don’t plan to get out of the city or need to carry too much stuff.

So what you’re saying is don’t go to or live in Japan then.

Oh no it’s awesome... Not really sure how you manage to come up to a conclusion like that. But if you want to drive around the country, on your own, in a cool car or whatever, which is most certainly what most Opponaut want to do if they come here, you better have a budget just got tolls.

Tourists can get unlimited Shinkansen and train passes for a fairly good deal.

My sarcasm was not effective. I was mostly joking, having noted that you just complained about how expensive it is to travel in Japan.

If not to explore, what reason is there then to visit or live there? :p

Haha, my bad, didn’t catch it :)

But yes it is expensive to go around here...

Sure, but I drive a larger car because I frequently take longer trips. A Kei car would brake my back. However, if someone only needs a city car a Kei would be fine.

That doesn’t seem like much, but I will math. Let us see, 100 miles @ 20 mpg means you would use 5 gallons. Here $3.35 for 91. So $16.75 for a 100 mile trip... Shit that is expensive. $40 would have gotten my over 11 gallons of fuel or roughly 238* miles of distance. (*all assuming I average 20 mpg)

Damn, I wonder if it is due to them importing most of their petrol?

None of this is valid anymore... The 6 to 9am leaving hours discounts was like 5 or 6 years ago. It’s now full price, all the time. Again, I have an ETC card that I use all the time.
