Sitter took off for St Patty’s day, so I did as well. Took the boys to the National Railroad Museum in Green Bay, which despite it’s name is fairly small. But they have a solid collection, and let you climb over most of it. In other words, it’s a great place to take a pair of toddlers. Here’s the highlights.

Nice. We’re going to Omaha in a month and I didn’t realize until recently that there’s a Big Boy there. Definitely going to see it.

I would have loved to see an old steam one in motion.

Awesome! I went to the museum in St. Louis last year and got to see Big Boy # 4006 as well as the other Aerotrain (only 2 were built, the one in St. Louis is # 1) while there.

You still can:

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Union Pacific is currently restoring one of the Big Boys to operating condition. Should be done sometime in the next few years.

The target completion for the Big Boy is the 2019 anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad.

It’s a bucket list item for steam heads

That’s not a half bad museum if they have a Big Boy and GG-1 sitting next to each other!

Cool. My family is from Green Bay and we’re there often, yet I’ve never been to the museum. Glad to see its kid friendly, we may need to make a stop there with my daughter.

They have some great trains, and lots of local stuff. The rail was very important in Wisconsin’s history. They have plans for a huge expansion, which is long overdue.

Here’s UP’s steam schedule: http://www.up.com/aboutup/special_trains/steam/index.shtml

There’s a more comprehensive calendar of steam trips across the country, and I’m glad I looked. There’s a trip with NKP 765 running from Joliet to Chicago in June, and it’s on the Metra Rock Island line! There have been years of talks about running a steam trip, and it’s finally happening!  http://www.railserve.com/steamspecials.html

It’s worth it. The train ride they do is kind of short, but kids love it. It’s better in warm weather so you can explore the outside stuff in comfort.

People who talk about “Patty’s Day” should be beaten with one.

Paddy’s Day if you’re being familiar.

I’ve been to the St. Louis county “Transportation museum” myself. While definitely more train focused, in 1 building there is a pretty neat (small) collection of cars too, including 1 of the Chrysler turbine cars that is in running condition. I got to talking to one of the old timers that maintains it, he said that they run it 1x per month to keep it in good running order.

Yep. I was excited to see that car. The whole thing ended up being something I lucked up on. My wife and I went to a little town just out from St. Louis to get a dog. We drove from Mississippi up there to get him and while we were in the area I wanted to see a few things since I had never been to Missouri before. Thankfully we left in the middle of the night to go up so I had time for us to go by so I could see it and the Big Boy before driving back home. Was a very long but awesome day.
