Kinja'd!!!

But I have to admit, I’m still pretty jealous of the 4Runner next to us. I had to teach the guy who owns it how to start a fire though, so there’s that I guess.

This is the first time I can remember having a data signal while camping. Not a good thing, I keep checking messages. Time to shut it down. Have some clover. Happy St. Patrick’s day Oppo!

How could he not start a fire?

He used all of his gasoline getting there.

Lack of planning and experience I guess. He kept piling up wood chips and holding a lighter up to them just expecting it to go. No backup plan of lighter fluid or anything. No idea to try using small twigs and make sure to leave room for air to get under it. And he needed a fire to cook all the food he brought.

you could have escaped there in a ford fiesta.... that’s not camping or escaping... that’s like a holiday inn with only slightly better accommodations..

The best fire starter? Lint from your dryer, it’s free and will light on the first spark from your firesteel.

Oh wow, good on you for helping him out. I once had to run over with my water bucket and dump it all over a neighbor’s table that he set on fire. Could have been a real bad day for that guy if I wasn’t there.

It blows me away that there are adults in this world - who would choose to go camping, no less! - who are incapable of starting a fire. But then I’ve always had a woodstove, so I’ve started many thousands of fires in my life.

In college whenever a group of us would decide to have a little campfire (which my peers for some reason always called “bonfires” - no, those are piles of brush the size of a car or larger... never mind) I’d go off looking for little twigs, dry leaves, birch bark, then bigger twigs, dry dead wood, etc. You know, basic making-a-fire stuff. Most people looked at me like I was some kind of Eagle Scout and in fact people would literally ask me if I was one. Kids these days...

Is that North Carolina? I’ve driven past that very spot.

Add a little vaseline to improve wet-weather performance and make the small lint fire last a little longer so it has a better chance of making a bigger fire.

My wife is all kinds of pumped to take her 6MT Forester camping. We’ve got a bunch of trips planned for the spring/summer.

I keep meaning to add that to my camping hack list. My wife saves all our lint and old paper towel and toilet paper rolls. You stuff the lint in the rolls and then you have nice portable fire starters. Throw a few in a water proof bag and you’re gtg.

Yeah I’ve seen it all. I’ve never had to put out someone’s fire but I’ve heard the same story before. 10 years or so ago a whole park burned down about an hour after we left from the guys one site over from where we were. We got his fire going but he was so behind schedule he took up an offer to use the another guy’s Coleman stove.

Eh it’s baby steps for the kids. This is the first time I’ve taken my 4 year old in a tent that isn’t in our back yard.

Yep lint works pretty well. I’ve also had good luck with Purel on pine cones. Usually have Purel with me anyway.

South Texas actually. Goliad State Park near Victoria. It’s a pretty small area along the San Antonio river that looks like this. Get away from the water and the trees get scrubby pretty quickly.

I take a medium sized ziplock bag full, keeps it pretty dry and you can squash it pretty flat if you’re backpacking.

Plus it smells nice if you use dryer sheets, If you have a dog it stinks.

Looks good, is that a tent only site?

Yeah tent only. Like most state parks here there are RV sites about a mile down the road.
