Just discovered a potential downside to these newfangled "learning" transmissions

Kinja'd!!!

Left Asheville via I40 and let’s just just say I had some fun with the winding 7% grade. Well, after engine braking in 4th for many miles the dumb thing won’t go into 6th (even at 75mph) unless I put it in manual and bump it up myself. Hopefully I can retrain it by the time I get to Charlotte.

My maxima did that. What would fix it for me is turning off the car and turning back on after about 10 seconds.

Kinja'd!!!

Time to merge. Quick, dowshift to 3rd!

I’m afraid I can’t do that, Dave.

What?

You have surpassed your carbon emissions limit this week, Dave. You must be kind to mother earth.

Fuck the earth! There’s an old lady driving a Prius, if we don’t pass her we’ll be stuck behind her for the next hour! DOWNSHIFT DAMNIT

Dave, if you need more time to get to work, you must get up earlier than 20 minutes before you leave

Goddamnit Yo-...wait, How did you know what time I got up this morning?

The microwave had a chat with me. Internet of things, Dave.

Kellyanne was right?! GODDAMN EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE

Oldfort Mountain confusing a transmission’s brane? Impossibru.

I was once asked to help shuttle cars and had the task of moving a BMW 5er that had an SMRT trans which had been trained wrong. Pretty awful.

My 15 year old ZF transmission does the learning thing, but I feel like it’s a D- student.

What will you be doing in Charlotte? Meeting the semi-famous Justin Westbrook?

Yep, I’ve definitely experienced that too. After a day of frozen-lake shenanigans in the Allroad, the poor transmission had absolutely no clue what to do back on dry land, hanging onto gears until 4k RPM even on the lightest throttle inputs. Of course, being a 15 year old Audi, the Tiptronic function is broken due to electrical issues, so I didn’t even have the option of bumping it up a gear. Thankfully, it sorted itself out after a few hours.

I once went down Old Fort mountain with my friend Russell (RIP) in a beige 4-door slant-6, 67 Dart with manual steering, automatic, disconnected seat belts and front bench seat (because Russell was too big to fit behind the wheel with the seat all the way back) , and drum brakes. We smoked at the time and lit up at the last flat part near Black Mountain. Because nicotine calmed our nerves... We slowed to about 40 mph, he shifted into 2nd gear, and started down the mountain.

We were going about 80, with brakes smoking, by the time we got to the bottom.

I’m fairly certain my driver’s ed instructor was either a sadist or a thrills junkie. Second day out, OldFort Mountain, in a janky ‘97ish Cavalier.

The worst days of OldFort mountain were when it was just US 70, two lanes, before the interstate. That route’s closed to cars now, still hikable, but has sections under rockslide.

A friend of my dad’s considered the Ultimate Test of his V10 Excursion to be the fact that it could go over 70 *up* the mountain, pulling a trailer, and barely feel it.

Hey. My car has a smart transmission too. The learning bits reside in my head and the shifter inputs extend from my body

Forever and always the smartest of transmissions. Capable of preemptive downshifts based only on visual clues.
