Well, my starter died last night. I replaced the starter tonight. It started twice now no more. I made a mistake of testing my starter (cranking) while I was driving last night..FUCK. I was about to pick up a friend when I turned off the car. Heard the whirring of the starter but nothing. Now I’m waiting for AAA...
I think my flywheel might be fucked...or it might be the starter solenoid....
Now this lovely book will occupy me.

Excuse my ignorance, but is there any reason to be cranking the starter when the engine is running? Can it prevent a stall or test something’s integrity in particular? It’s slightly terrifying to me because sometimes I’m afraid I’ll reflexively turn the key to the right instead of the left after I’ve parked up.

Gotcha, so it in itself is not immediately harmful, only in repeated or extreme cases. Yeah, sometimes I idle it for a bit after a hard mountain drive and forget if it’s on after I’ve gathered my things. Yet to turn it wrong, but almost certainly someday in the future.

You can just hear the whirring of the starter spinning? If the ring gear on the flywheel got chewed up real bad by the starter, it will usually make a chinging sound when you try to start. You could put the car in gear and push it to rotate the whole trans and engine, to see if you can get the flywheel turned so it will engage the starter gear

Haha, I wouldn’t put intelligence into the equation, more like the V50 idles pretty noisily so oftentimes I’m reminded as soon as I turn my attention back to the dash.
