Wisconsin has this nifty law that says a minor can drink alcohol in a bar or restaurant if they’re with a family member or guardian. The establishment obviously has the right to refuse service though. I don’t know the background of the law, but presume it was snuck in when the fed made Wisconsin raise its drinking age in the 80s by threatening to withhold highway funds.

I have been on both sides of this. I have drank underage in bars (usually having a hot toddy when snowmobiling to warm up) and I have worked as a bouncer and let people drink. As long as people are being responsible, I don’t have a problem with it.

Personally I think its the parent’s responsibility to teach their kids how to drink responsibly and to know their limits. Its kind of dumb to keep alcohol away from people then send them off to college or wherever, where its everywhere. I knew a few people who were overprotected and lost their minds when they got some freedom.

Similar to how you can drink in your own home with parent permission but in a bar this time.

It’s like that in the U.K.

The law as it stands is that a minor can’t be served a drink.

If however a parent or guardian is with them, they can drink if it is bought for them.

Our drinking age here is 18 but many if not most drink from 13.

There really isn’t so much a drinking age as a buying alcohol age.

Wisconsin’s age was 18 until the mid-80s, when the new wave of puritanism came through under Reagan. I still think its idiotic that an 18 can do literally everything else in this country (vote, go to war, smoke) except for have a beer. Makes no sense to me.

Ohio’s got a similar law, what it boils down to is:

If you’re underage, you’re forbidden from ordering, paying for, or sharing the cost of any alcohol.

Your parent, non-underage spouse(!), or legal guardian can provide you with an alcoholic beverage, and must be with you the entire time you’re in possession of it.

True right. It’s mad.

If I was going into battle, I’d want a quick drink.

A couple states have this, and I think it’s a good idea.

Also, it’s totally acceptable to bring small children into bars, even later in the evening. I’ve been on a bachelor party bar crawl and seen toddlers.

Yup, new Orleans is the same. 21 to buy, 18 to drink in the privacy of your own residence. Fun fact, when I was in college there a dorm room constituted your own residence, so it was legal to drink on campus.

Ohio was the same way, not sure if it still is. This was back in 96

The parents of kids in the bars late are definitly getting the side eye from others, but up until dinner or so is fine. Honestly theres a bar up north we go to and my daughter (2yo) knows the one bartender’s name. Although, He does bribe her with cherries whenever we’re there.
