A few days ago I asked you to choose which car to take to Oppomeet Europe. A lot of you voted and commented, and it was pretty clear which car you wanted to see at Oppomeet.

From 94 voters, 54 chose the Chevy, 37 voted the GTI, 2 voted the Audi, Hammerheadfistpunch voted the Pajero, and in the comments, Opposaurus voted -1 for the Audi.

The comment section brought up a good question: are you allowed to drive a car with no seatbelts on the Nürburgring?

The rules say you have to wear a seatbelt while on the track, but doesn’t stipulate if this counts for cars that never had seatbelts. I contacted the service center to clarify this. The answer was short and clear: no, cars without belts are unfortunately not allowed on the Ring.

I didn’t contact Spa, but I guess they have similar safety rules.

Taking the Chevy would mean no circuit for me, bummer. So now the question is: taking the Pug and doing the “normal thing” or taking the Chevy and skipping the tracks. I’ll flip a coin.

Do the ring! Take the Pug.

Take the Pug. I imagine the ring will be well worth it.

Take the Chevy, ride with somebody else on the track.

Alternately: Bolt a lap belt in the Chevy. Take the Chevy.

Skip the tracks. Makes for a good excuse for another road trip.

Perhaps for next time, you can install an original style belt - depending on how much you want to try taking it on a track.

http://www.andoauto.com/Chevy5866.htm

Although, you might technically then not by law be allowed to remove the belt again, nor use the car without it... You’d have to weigh it against how much you like the car without it, and whether that would raise the value of the car or lower it.

bolt in some lap belts. you might need two bolts per belt. you can always take them out after the trip. BUT GETTING TO CRUISE THE RING IN THE BEL AIR.............

If you’re feeling risky, just put in “seat belts” in the vain of the paper mache roll cages those crazy Swedes used to put in Volvos.

I’m surprised you never had belts installed into the Chevy, actually. It may not have came with them from the factory, and you may be worried about originality (which I can understand), but it’s a pretty small (and not terribly expensive) concession to safety that may just save your life (even belts on just the front seats). Remember - it’s the ONE time you need them that is important...

Not criticising or anything! Just offering my two cents! They’d be the first thing I install on any classic I ever owned if the car didn’t come with them! :)

Take the Chevy.

You weren’t doing a true hot lap in the Chevy anyway.

Take the Chevy.

I think I’d bolt a lap belt in and go for it.

Either try to get some belts installed in the Chevy, or just take it with you. Me and the Teg would love to have you for the Ring and otherwise we have 10 more cars to choose from, lol.

Ring idk, up to you...how much would the poor Chevy pitch and yaw on the turns tho? The Ring was about as far from the GM engineers’ thoughts when they designed her as gay marriage and cellphone apps haha

Seriously tho put in some belts, no matter what you do about Europpomeet...period ones if you’d prefer. We want you to keep safe!

Beautiful ‘59 btw. That has to be one of the best dashes ever

or stopped by common sense? its a racetrack, not a street. ppl are going VERY fast on it. the speed differential between you and them is well beyond the need to justify that

I totally agree with you. I’d be the first to advise this to anyone else, especially since I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for a seatbelt and airbags. I have had the car for a year now, and it’s really the thing I tell myself every time I drive it.

I think it depends on the buyer, but I don’t plan on selling it anytime soon. I really should put belts in it, not only for hot laps

I’m in a similar position with the Galaxie. I feel like I rather ought to put in at least a driver’s position belt just to have, but it certainly wasn’t required.

The laps would be parade laps anyway, so nothing too fast for the car, but yeah, it’s not really meant for it.

I should really put some belts in it, but it needs some solid fixing points.

Thanks! It’s a 1960 model though, the dashboards are pretty similar. And I agree, it’s gorgeous.

It wouldn’t be a hot lap, just a parade lap, but I agree that you shouldn’t go to a track without any safety features

Kinja'd!!! "bob and john" (bobandjohn)
03/16/2017 at 17:39, STARS: 0

i’m not worried about you going fast. I KNOW you will not be doing a hot lap.

but what happens if someone ELSE comes flying around the corner behind you, loses it, and slams into the back of you?

Right right, of course, my bad...looked back at earlier post and voilà 1960 rear lights/styling. Still beautiful

Parade lap makes sense, sounds fun actually. Best wishes with the belts.
