On the front page we have a guy with a problem, so he wrote Torch (ok, apparently he has lots of problems...). We all know that the main page is full of idiots. So its Oppo’s turn to answer.
Set-up: Middle aged man wants something not too boring for him that can be handed down to his 16yo daughter as a first car. Must be less than 3yo, fit 4, under $30k, and able to impress his CEO. Location: CA.

The Cascada likely won’t impress the boss, but it’s a great choice for all the other reasons.
The answer here really could be Miata. A nice club model would suit him, be different enough to turn a few heads, the daughter will love it, but it won’t have enough power to get her in trouble.

The girl piece makes this easier, I’d say CPO 3.0T A6 which would be quick but not too fast for a teenager to drive carefully.

The Buick Cascada isn’t under $30k, even used, at this point. A gently used Regal GS would work, though. Especially with the 6-speed manual. But I don’t see a CEO being too impressed with a Buick.
The Volvo C70 is a nice car, and might fit the bill. Maybe a lower-level ATS coupe?

The CEO line wasn’t about impressing the boss, but about avoiding a “what the hell is that junk?” reaction. It’d certainly fail the first but succeed at the second.

Ha, nicely done. Those answers on the front page (apart from Tom’s) were the most infuriating ever. It’s like they didn’t even read the question.
If set on a car (as opposed to an SUV/crossover of some sort) I’d suggest 3 options - Lexus IS, Mazda 6, or Cadillac ATS. Don’t know much of the latter’s reliability, but seem like a good domestic option that unfortunately hasn’t been a huge sales success.
I’d also recommend things like a Subaru Forester XT (has the power without the idiot-attracting qualities of a WRX plus more space/practicality) - can be a sharp looking vehicle without being too over the top.
Or alternatively, a Mini - i’m surprised I didn’t see any suggested, especially given the image conscious LA clientele. A nicely specced lightly-used countryman should be within the price range. Fun platform, decent space, and while I hate the looks it has some level of cred apparently (and isn’t horrible in some colors).

My initial thought was Fiesta ST. The back seats aren’t super roomy, but are fine, it’s a fun, practical car that is fast and great handling without being some 400bhp monster and comes in nice colours which appeal to even non ‘car people’. Or a Mini Cooper maybe.
It’s still a bit much for a first car, but there’s nothing that balances the requirements without getting out of hand performance wise.
