So I’m going car shopping on Saturday and I’m either coming back with a new E300 or that LS460. I’d rather have the LS but the E300 is somehow cheaper to lease, even though it’s worth $14,000 more. I’m going to try to bully Lexus into matching Benz’s rates. If it was up to you, which one would you guys pick, and why ?

E300 because hood ornament. I also don’t really like Lexuses interfaces, or their styling.

If you’re leading then I wouldn’t even bother looking at anything but the E-class right now within that category.

Since they’re both under warranty you could not be financially slaughtered by the Merc. However, if you actually enjoy driving (not just to and from the service bay), Lexus.

Good luck finding a luxury package W213 on a lot. I’ve never seen one in person here.

Have you test driven both? The E300 has a turbo I4 and the LS has a V8. The E300 has to be optioned out higher to really get that “Benz” feel not sure if the LS is the same way. I’m an MB homer for sure so I’d probably pick the E but that engine leaves something to be desired for sure.

Have they moved the digital dash from Premium 3 to Premium 2 yet? Read somewhere that it happened or was going to happen because Premium 3 included a bunch of things most people did not want to pay extra for tacking on an extra $11k to the MSRP just to get the digital dash.

Is the Lexus new? I was under the impression it was a late model CPO/lease return.

4cyl vs V8 is hard to compare. Does a 4cyl middle MB really cost more than a top model Lexus?

I’ve had a few E300s as loaners and I definitely prefer the V8. Obviously V12 trumps all, but that isn’t realistic at the moment.

I’ve seen a decent amount on the road, the dealer by my parents house has 26 in the Luxury trim.

Wacky. Maybe a regional thing? Every W213 at my local dealer is a “sport”:

http://www.mercedesbenzofbellevue.com/new-inventory/index.htm?search=&saveFacetState=true&model=E-Class&driveLine=&engine=&trim=&lastFacetInteracted=inventory-listing1-facet-anchor-model-20

Here, a luxury W212 is also a hen’s tooth, I have seen a few, but “sport” outnumbers probably 50:1.

Post the lease numbers (money factor, residual value, etc) and we can see why it’s cheaper to get the E300.

How much more is the Lexus? I just can’t get into Lexus’ styling, everything looks good until you get to the front. Thinking about all the times I’ve STARED at the front of my Benz, admiring it, how it appeared almost sword-like (being Palladium also added to it!) I just can’t get those feels for a Lexus.

How are you optioning the E? I know it has a lot of standard equipment already, are you going luxury or sport package?

Kinja'd!!! "E90M3" (e90m3)

Possibly a regional thing, also looks like most of the ones close to you are 4matic. I assume that’s something you’d want in WA, you don’t need it GA.

Yeah, AWD is a big thing here even if many will never need it. Even my Bluetec is a 4Matic - if it was a luxury trim car it would be something of a unicorn.

So the E300 lease is 449 a month with $4000 down for 36 months for a 2016 E300 with an MSRP of $61,000. The Lexus is 761 a month with $3000 down for 48 months, with a MSRP of 45,000. I’m going to try to get Lexus down to $500/month. It’d be a 4 magic with the sport package.

I wish German cars had a Marti report-style setup where you could break production down by color and options. The Lexus in question here would be interesting in that way too. For high end cars, I think it is possible to make a 1 of 1. Not any real value, but it’s cool to think about.

My tectite grey W210 E55 was a rare bird, esp with COMAND and ventilated seats, I read that the color alone was only in the double digits, not to mention the options. I have yet to see another blue W212 E250 with brown interior.

I really wish those stats were out there, it doesn’t make it any more valuable it’s just cool to know how rare your car is. There can’t be many 6MT E92 328i M-Sports out there, the one I bought was one of two I saw on the market within 300 miles of home.

Also at 36 months you’ll be just in time for the new inline 6 engines Merc has been working on. Maybe your next one will be an I6 with electric turbos powered by their new 48 volt system.

If I do a 4 year lease on a LS or E class my next car after it will be some sort of CPO V12 S class. A 222 S65 or Maybach maybe.

03/16/2017 at 11:55, STARS: 0

The LS is a certified 2014, the E is new. I like the LS a lot more, but it doesn’t make sense to drop 300 more per month on it.

Kinja'd!!! "V12 Jake- Hittin' Switches" (jbv12)
03/16/2017 at 11:59, STARS: 0

I assume the higher rate is due to the higher expended depreciation on the LS.

Kinja'd!!! "E92M3" (E46M3)
03/16/2017 at 12:09, STARS: 0

Normally that’s how the math works. But the MB will depreciate more rapidly in this case. Some manufacturers really try their best to prevent leases on certain cars.

Kinja'd!!! "E92M3" (E46M3)
03/16/2017 at 12:23, STARS: 1

I mean it looks better than it does on their other models, but I’m just not a fan of the car as a whole.

It just screams, I recently turned 60. We bought this car because Consumer Reports said it was the “best buy” in full size luxury sedans, and the most exciting thing I do all year is go to “The Masters”

Kinja'd!!! "fintail" (fintail)
03/16/2017 at 13:46, STARS: 0

For me, the question would be how long I want to keep it. A long term relationship with the LS might be less work than a lease then buy on the E. But if you want to feast from the buffet of the car world and move on in 36 months or less, the lease is the way to go.

EDIT: Just read your lease numbers - MB sounds like a fair enough price. Lexus is insane - I was thinking that was a purchase price.

Kinja'd!!! "V12 Jake- Hittin' Switches" (jbv12)
03/16/2017 at 14:59, STARS: 0

Exactly. I’d rather have the LS, so I’m going to use Benzes rate to try to bully Lexus into giving me that LS for $5-550 a month.

Have you driven the E300? I don’t find them to be lacking in power at all. Not blazing of course but more than adequate. They make about the same power as a 272 powered 212, but have better gearing.

Kinja'd!!! "Rico" (ricorich)
03/16/2017 at 16:33, STARS: 1

Adequate but not anywhere as good as the V12 Jake is used to. It’s the same engine that’s in the W205 (now mated to a 9G) I had as a loaner for 3 weeks I found it to be okay but not as linear as the 3.5 V6. Not slow but it could’ve been better, I’m looking forward to the M264 hopefully the performance is better.

I have never seen another space grey M3 sedan in person, always wanted to park next to one. Probably highly unlikely I’ll see one two since there were only 635 space grey M3s sold in the US. One of the nice things about M cars is someone took their time to aggregate the productions numbers, regular E9Xs, not so much. It’s possible that the E92 I’m getting is like 1 of a couple hundred. No added value, but would explain why there are literally 0 other 6MT E92 M-Sport coupes for sale in the US, or at least that I could find.

I’ve seen early W222 under 60K, but some of these first year cars don’t have many options (no driver’s assist, basic wheels, etc). If one could get a truly nice one for the price of a 4cyl E, it is likely a better value.

I wish manufacturers would make such data available to all - it’s not like they are hiding trade secrets (unless their claims of limited production turn out to be false).

Funny thing, for my tectite W210 E55 that was apparently one of ~25, there was another one in my area - but I think this area received more older AMGs than most places, when new.

Maybe if I call BMW of NA they’ll tell me. I might have to do that. It’s possible you just have to ask. It does seem on the limited edition cars, people pull the VINs anyway. I mean someone took the time to compile a list of every 135is sold in the United States. Ironically the 135is coupe is rarer than a 1M. Also apparently me and my dad like rare BMWs.

I saw so many M cars driving around when I was living with my parents, there was probably another SG E90 M3 running around somewhere in ATL.
