I just realized why I love driving so much

You know that feeling of wonderment when you see someone dancing or playing piano incredibly well? You know the slight pang of envy that comes with that, the little part of you that says “I wish I could do that”? When I’m driving, I feel like I have some skill like that. I’m by no means a great driver, but to me, it feels like something I have that level of ability with.

I heavily relate. When I’m in the car driving around with a friend that isn’t really in to cars, they are so fascinated by me driving a stick, heel toeing, and just rowing through the gears. Can’t help but feel a little proud haha.

I know what you mean!

I love trying to see how precise I can be, and the best part is, you can practice anywhere! I feel like a pro when I bulls-eye even the most mundane things, like the exact middle of my lane, or when my bumper lines up with the edge of a parking spot.

I also like trying to perfect my driving inputs. I like to turn the wheel and try to get the perfect angle so that I can complete my turn smoothly, without having to make any mid-corner adjustments. Or apply just the right amount of braking pressure and hold it there until I’m almost at the stop line, then ease off right at the end to keep the stop from being an abrupt one.

There are few things better than downshifting then nailing it. One of my favorite things is the 6->3 downshift. Get it right and it is so satisfying.

Nailing heel toe and Rev matches during regular daily driving gives me such joy. Meanwhile all my friends’(college students) driving habits has me scared or shaking my head.

I wonder sometimes if my friends notice how much thought I put into driving. But since they are college students.....probably not

I love driving, but I don’t envy musicians, I just listen in awe of their skill.

I think part of it has to do with the immersiveness of it all. The thunder of the powerplant, the smells of warm brakes and burnt rubber, that feeling when your chest gets slightly pinned back during a good launch, that feeling in your gut from keeping your foot in it through a mid-esses dip, the ever-elusive butt dyno, the incredibly satisfaction in holding the ideal 5 degrees of slip angle. Even if it only really comes together about 20% of the time, that 20% of time is still absolutely magical.

Peraonally, I love driving because it’s a good time to clear my mind of anything and everything and just feel good. I put on some music, put the E34 in sport mode, and enjoy the exhaust note. It always makes me super happy getting thumbs up and smiles from random people on the street (which happens a lot now, because loud-as-hell V8 wagon).

Then I get a bit sad when I’ve burned through half a tank (like 9.5 gallons!) of premium 93 in an hour and a half...

But the great feelings totally outweigh the cost.

What it sounds like you’re describing is entering a mental state of flow*, or being “in the zone” or to Buddhist ‘mindfullness’. It’s when/where you’re fully engaged in to something, time seems to stand still (or not exist), you’re fully and effortlessly concentrating and feel really alive. You know when you experience it b/c you say something like “holy shit that was great!” & immediately want to do it again.

I’ve read that driving is the most common (and for some people only) time they’re able to enter a state of flow.

Psychologists have found that some people can experience it just by watching others who are experiencing it, most often found in fans watching sports. As you started above “that feeling of wonderment & awe” can lead someone watching to ‘magic moments’ where they enter a flow state themselves. I think this is a really good explaination for the incredible popularity of sports.

*term coined by Dr. Mihaly Chentmihalyi from research starting in the 1960s on happiness, finding that above income level high enough for basic needs met (food, shelter, safety), finding how to increase the amount of time in a flow state to be the greatest predictor of level of happiness
