Kinja'd!!!

I know you don’t want to believe it, but it’s true.

The exhaust on the Fiat 500 Abarth sounds like something is broken, or at best, like tinny shit. If you are going for sexy Italian sound, you’d be far better off with the superior sound of a stock Vespa exhaust.

Anyone that disagrees with me listened to too much loud music or they’re so old that they can no longer hear high frequency sounds, which means their hearing cannot be trusted.

Edit: If you have only heard it online, you haven’t actually heard it because it’s unlikely that the microphones, speakers, and compression involved is capable of reproducing the full range of frequencies it produces.

Edit2: I have come up with a name for the sound they make: “asthmatic chainsaw with a loose chain in a hallway”.

Thank you for your time.

Your opinion is wrong.

I am envious of the Abarth exhaust, and would kill to have that burble goodness on my own car.

You mean an angry chainsaw?

I wonder if they sound better inside, but I’ve only heard them outside. I keep hearing them while walking and they sound so awful that I cannot comprehend what people like about them.

Then again, my hearing range is roughly that of someone less than half my age.

Chainsaw with crackling and burbling greatness?

The Abarth is like the love child of I4 with the burbling of something.. well bigger. Without sounding like a goddamn ricer. Sounds like the closest you can get to making an I4 sound orgasmic.

Then yes, I would slap that on my car in a heartbeat.

Bubble pipes are the best pipes.

Since this is a post about exhausts and I just metioned bubble pipes...bubble pipes + exhaust pipes...I’m thinking Bosozoku pipes and some bubble juice...I mean, we got whistle tips (Woo-WOOO), why can’t a fella get bubble tips?

See, this the genius that Oppo and a couple beers can inspire. Bubble tips. Heard it here first.

spent about 30 minutes this morning listening for the tinny shit you speak of. Listened to a cold 22 degree day start, pleasant. Replayed 1st, 2nd, 3rd up and down at reasonable to higher rpms. Heard some gurgles, burbles, even a back fire or two. Also listened at cruising speeds in 4th and 5th. Maybe on the casual acceleration, hitting 4th/5th cruising but not at highway speeds it’s a quieter tone however not tinny to my ears...I was just driving it though so do with that what you will

I’m going to say it’s unlikely, though. Most of the people buying them around here wouldn’t know where to start with getting their exhaust replaced, let alone have the ability to do it themselves.

Kinja'd!!! "Eric @ opposite-lock.com" (theyrerolling)
03/16/2017 at 11:53, STARS: 0

From videos, I think these sound better inside than outside. They’re almost the exact opposite of my car, which sounds “meh” inside, then when the sound symposer kicks in they sound like you blew some hose off the engine (I really need to disable that thing; I’ve grown to hate it), while it sounds shockingly nice outside the car (which is hard to do with I4s, hence they usually simple go for quiet).

I updated my post with my best description of the sound. It’s mostly “asthmatic chainsaw” with a loose chain metallic grind and some echo. It reminds me of the noise of a bunch of chainsaws at a distance in a forest, but much closer and airier.

On the other hand, if your point is to draw attention, they definitely draw attention.

I can’t recall the sound of a Crossfire, but the C30 sounds good, so I’m not sure what you’re getting at here.

Kinja'd!!! "Eric @ opposite-lock.com" (theyrerolling)
03/16/2017 at 12:34, STARS: 0

I’m not sure how you could compare the two. The G35 is wildly superior sounding.

I really wish I could understand what people are hearing here, because I feel like I’m missing it entirely. There are so many cars that sound so much better that get little-to-no love. I mean, it’s loud, but that doesn’t impress me. Any kid can make their car loud by removing various parts.

Kinja'd!!! "Milky" (jordanmielke)
03/16/2017 at 13:34, STARS: 0

My roommates and my car all have loud, nice exhaust sounds. The C30 needed a new muffler system and my car got a muffler delete. The Abarth needed nothing.

But that car doesn’t actually sound broken. Even the Abarth doesn’t particularly sound broken, it just makes a lot of unfortunate frequencies that would normally be corrected. Usually this is down to poor exhaust design and is primarily encountered in cheap aftermarket (usually not smog compliant) exhausts, hence my visceral reaction to this car’s exhaust.
