Kinja'd!!!

Often enough around here I see the question “what’s a good way to start learning how to work on my car?”. Well I found this great old book the other day while going through some boxes up at the farm. It seems like one of those that tells you what to do to avoid trouble or get past issues that may arise. I haven’t torn into it much but it seems like it will be a good read! This is why I love manuals for simple cars. To understand the future, look to the past.

Cool. I love finding history in the attic. Also, neat Model A. And I even like the color.

I have an ancient textbook on steam engines. It’s in a box somewhere.

Thank you! It is a little greener than our 28 truck. I am a sucker for green cars!

I wondered what literature was lurking with the A/B parts in that building...

I’ve been reading a Ford Cruise-O-Matic manual from ‘58 intensively and a reprint of “the Key to Metal Bumping” from ‘53, a lot of the same kind of feel.

Yeah there is an awful lot of literature in there in between Easy Rider magazines from the 80s. I found the entire parts catalogs for the 31 A line. And boobs :)

Have you ever figured out exactly how many spare Model A engine blocks and transmission you own? I swear it was like 1/2 dozen.

Oh so am I. They don’t make enough green cars. That truck is a peach!

“This elimination of unnecessary parts and the endeavor to simplify the assembly in order to reduce manufacturing expense really acts in favor of the purchaser because it is easier to maintain, operate, and repair a simple car...” - 1930s auto industry.

“Ha ha, fuck you right in the ear” - modern auto industry

So goddamn true. 99% of the public doesn’t do shit but *maybe* change a wiper blade anyhow though. Victims of the industry or their own worst enemy?

And this is why I prefer to own base models with a manual transmission.

I think it’s a mutual emfuckening, and also kind of a feedback loop thing, because the leadership of auto companies *is* drawn from the public, in a sense. Public loses interest in doing things for themselves, executive has no interest in doing things for himself *and* no understanding of it, executive gets things produced that stymie self-repair and annoy the public until they lose interest...

Wasn’t quite as long ago as people think, though. I mean, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance was a best-seller and even ordinary journals other than PM used to tell you how to do things. Whatd’ya say - blame Nixon for that trip to China and cheap consumer good culture? The EU greenies for encouraging “drop-free” maintenance and Stuttgart, Munich, etc. implementing that as horribly as possible? Tokyo for trying to make sure cars stayed disposable AND zero maintenance at the same time, a double-whammy? Malcolm Bricklin for making cheap car maintenance utterly terrifying?

It’s a puzzler, for sure.

That’s awesome! I did something a little more modern, but the same idea. When I decided to tackle my first brake job on the ‘94 Roadmaster I had for a while, I busted out an old Chilton’s manual I bought from the local library for $3. I’ll be damned, if you just do what the manual says, it works!!

There is an answer there that needs to be found out. We will just keep fighting the good fight though. Busted knuckles and all
