Kinja'd!!!

You’ll sign a lot of paper next time you buy a car at a dealership - but how much of it will you read? Here are the things you are most likely not going to see if you are not careful. It’s all in the fine print.

I’ve been speaking to people for 25 years about car purchases gone bad. And many of them cannot do anything because of what they signed when they bought the car.

Normally, that wouldn’t raise any eyeborws. The problem is that most people are unaware of what they signed when they bought their car. And this stuff is now buried in almost every transaction that takes place.

You might not be able to negotiate away the fine print but you should at least know what you are signing. At the very least, it will save you the embarrassment of having to hear it from me. This week’s audio:

Steve Lehto has been practicing law for 25 years, almost exclusively in consumer protection and Michigan lemon law. He wrote The Lemon Law Bible and Preston Tucker and His Battle to Build the Car of Tomorrow.

This website may supply general information about the law but it is for informational purposes only. This does not create an attorney-client relationship and is not meant to constitute legal advice, so the good news is we’re not billing you by the hour for reading this. The bad news is that you shouldn’t act upon any of the information without consulting a qualified professional attorney who will, probably, bill you by the hour.

best if you don’t buy cars like Dave Barry does.

When I finally went in to buy the car, I was desperate to get it over with as quickly as possible. Here is how I negotiated:

SALESPERSON (showing me a sheet of paper with figures on it): Okay, Dave. Here`s a ludicrously inflated opening price that only a person with RICE-A-RONI for brains would settle for.

ME: You got a deal.

I am worse with houses. The last time we were trying to buy a house, I made Beth crazy because I was willing to make a formal offer on whatever structure we were standing in at the time:

ME: This is perfect! Isn`t this perfect?!

BETH: This is the real-estate office.

ME: Well, how much are they asking?

As a loan officer at a credit union, it pains me to hear stories from members wanting to refinance with us who didn’t read some of the fine print or end up paying for frivolous extras that a stealership has added on.

A vehicle is usually the biggest investment, aside from buying a home, that a person will make in their lifetime. Not reading everything and asking questions for something as expensive as a vehicle is just beyond me.
