Kinja'd!!!

Nissan March (MDM Micra?) for your time.

Anyway, I have a slow leak in one of my tires, lost 10psi over a week, and the tire shop took it off the wheel and did a dunk test and couldn’t find anything.

Help me Oppo, you’re my only hope!

I’ve always wanted to say that line.

Temp fluxuation during day/night?

Valve stem?

do the dunk test yourself.

Not a flux, none of the other tires had significant change. I assumed a dunk test would find a bad valve stem, but who knows. I’ll check more into that.

Try checking the valve stem or valve core?

Don’t use fix a flat. WHile it may work, the tire shop will HATE YOU if they have to take the tire off the rim.

Also, tell them to GTFO with the dunk tank and get some Seek A Leak.

I had a slow leak in my tire, so I just filled it back up. My TPS system is actually pretty good. Finally was like I should get that fixed, had three nails in my right rear.

In that case.

Take tire off wheel, inspect bead of tire and bead seat of wheel, replace valve stem, and remount.

If it still leaks, give it some fix-a-flat.

That’s the only time I have ever used that shit.

What is seek a leak and can it be done myself?

You have an incompetent tire shop if it’s really 10psi/week. You can spray around with windex or soapy water if you can’t do a dunk test at home. Take off the valve cap and spray that too.

Was this a free inspection, or was there money involved?

I don’t wanna try taking it of the rim myself. The shop did and said it was fine and I’ll defer to them over myself since I have no experience finding leaks. I’ll look into replacing the valve stem though.

I walked in because of the leak. I would’ve paid, but they didn’t charge me since they didn’t find the leak.

Put a bit of dish soap and water in a squirt bottle. Squirt down entire tire. Squirt down both sides of the bead. Squirt the valve stem and diddle it around a bit. Look for escaping bubbles. Mark the sidewalk near where the leak is in a way that will remain obvious. Paint markers work great. Take to a different tire shop.

Its really a bubbly fluid that gets mixed with water and.... you can probably buy it on Amazon if you want a lifetime supply.

But its hella good at finding leaks in tires

Ok cool.

Yeah, like mondialgoesto11 said, shoot some soapy water at it and look closely for bubbles. Maybe the weight of the car is needed to expose the leak.

When I had a slow leak on my previous tires, I sprayed the tire with some soapy water to see where the leak was. It would bubble around the leak.

Using fix-a-flat is getting increasingly unavoidable as more cars omit spares. But if you have to use it, do tell the tire shop, so they are at least prepared for the mess to come. I also understand it is better all around if you get the tire dealt with quickly (don’t know why you wouldn’t in the first place, but people are weird).

That’s what I would do the first time around. You already did the first part, now get that stem replaced.

I went through this for MONTHS with a tire once. Remove, clean, remount, repeat. Ended up taking it to another shop stating the same symtom, let them take a crack at it.

Then I filled it with goop, and I only lost 10psi every few months.

Eventually it failed, but I got several more years out of them.

If the tyre is fine maybe its a bent wheel? Or a bad valve?

if you dont have a bucket, soap and water. pour it over tire, look for bubbles.

Happens sometimes, did you check the valve steam?, Eventually it will get big enough to fine. Or if you have a big bucket or trough or water you can put the whole tire in and find the leak that a spray bottle and soapy water can’t find.

I doubt it’s the wheel. They took the tire off and checked the wheel, I’m going to check the valve later today.

Does it leak when sitting overnight? My dad one time had a case before where a wheel was bent in such a way that it would only leak when the car was driven. It was quite difficult to diagnose. He ended up replacing the wheel, which fixed the issue.

yeah - I’ve got one super slow leaker, like less than a lbs a month, and I’m pretty sure it’s the valve, (when I unscrew the valve cap on that one tire just a touch of air is released...)

get yourself some bubbly dish soap, and start pouring it over the top of the tire slowly. look for bubbles. if you dont find it on the first side, roll the car ahead a bit. i usually can find leaks with JUST water. usually takes me about a gallon of water, poured out using a red solo cup. the soap REALLY helps find the leaks though. be sure to check the inner part of the valve, the base of the valve stem, and the bead, inner and outer. if the tires are real old keep an eye on the sidewall too...... it helps to have the tire slightly over inflated, say 40-ish psi.........

AND keep your trusty tire inflator of choice with you, for trips around town..........

I once had part of a staple in my tire that made a miniscule hole. i even water tested it and never saw it. it was a super slow leak and after a while it worked it way out 1mm to see it.

Did they dismount the tire and look at the wheel bead and clean it up before reinstall? Discount tire will typically do that with a slow leak, they assume the rim is leaking and clean it up and see what happens.

Yep they did that. It was discount tire too. I’ll check the pressure in a few days and see if it’s held.

Nah, they’re steelies. They didn’t do the valve stem. But today I couldn’t find any leaks from the valve so who knows.

I’d punch myself for being dumb (I’m the tire guy in this scenario).

Seriously it’s a leaking tire, not rocket science. You have no idea how many times I’ve told lubies or apprentices to find a leak in a tire only to have them say there isn’t one. Then I go look and find it in two minutes and they punch themselves for being dumb.

Do you have kids? Have you ever asked them to go find something? They can’t find it, so then you go look only to discover it was sitting right out in the open with flashing neon signs advertising its location? That’s probably what’s going on here.

Yeah I’m gonna check the tire myself soon. I checked the valve and one side of the bead today and couldn’t find anything.
