This Vox article is good at explaining the complexity of fuel economy standards but completely glosses over the ever-so-important physics & details. No matter what you do, heavier cars require more energy to move around. Cars continue to get heavier. On top of that, we KNOW that automakers design for the test, not for fuel economy.

I think cars were getting heavier and now are leveling off and/or getting lighter again. Or at least that was my understanding.

Fleet averages are still way up, but that’s mostly due to increased popularity of trucks.

Companies have been focusing on weight reduction because of the increasing fuel economy standards. Some of that will stick around, but I would be surprised if weights don’t keep creeping up.

Well some new materials will get cheaper, 3D printing etc.. can lighten stuff up in the future. CA has it’s own standards and they will fight, companies will comply with CA until they don’t have to. But Drumpf won’t be around forever, thank the bloody baby jeezuz and they can put the EPAs guts back in and get back to being sane. My fun cars are exempt and at some point you will be driving a fun hybrid electric or a classic, that’s just how it’s going to be.

I don’t like anything that attempts to hinder technological progress, and reducing the standards for automakers does exactly that. Might as well remove seat belts while they’re at it. It’s like this administration literally wants to transport the world back in time

This.

I was mentioning the other day, that if trump is successful at rolling back fuel economy, he’s just gonna set Detroit up to lose its competitiveness (to Japan etc) again when oil prices go back up.....

Same with global warming.. EVERYONE knows it’s happening. But the republicans prefer to hide their head in the sand. So meanwhile, US energy companies don’t have to innovate, create new solutions.. But China, India, etc ARE working on solutions. And when the rest of the world is ready to adopt 1st world tech for their power plants, are they going to be importing US technology, or Chinese and Indian technology....?

But hey, look over there! Trans-people in public restrooms!!!!!!!

I agree completely! They’re setting themselves up for an abysmal failure in the future. When you combine the technological problems with the setbacks of the current education system, the economic future of America really starts to look dim.
